Agriculture in the Tropics: University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is one of Australia's largest research-intensive Universities, with over 25,000 students. The University has three campuses, St Lucia campus in Brisbane, the Gatton campus 100km west of Brisbane and the new Ipswich campus. It is the only University in Australia offering courses on tropical agriculture, natural resource science and management and food Science and Technology that is actually situated in the tropics. The School of Land and Food is one of three Schools in the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (NRAVS), and is an amalgamation of the Department of Agriculture (St Lucia) and the Departments of Plant Production and Food Science and Technology from the Gatton campus. The School has an enrolment of 964 full time students, with 19% as postgraduate students, producing the largest postgraduate School of Agriculture in Australia. About half of all postgraduate students come from 26 countries around the world.

Expertise

There are 111 academic and research staff in the School, supported by 52 technical staff, providing specific and integrated expertise in Soils and Land Resources, Plant Improvement, Crop Production Technology, Pastures and Rangelands Utilisation, Crop Protection, Horticulture and Food Science and Technology. This expertise is focused on the problems of agriculture and the environment in tropical regions, and has application in both national and international settings.

The Department has close collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Queensland Department for Primary Industries (QDPI) and other specialist centres based at the University of Queensland. The School has Centres in Mined Land Rehabilitation, Plant Propagation and Seed Technology, Pesticide Application and Safety and Ultra-High-Temperature Dairy Processing. This means that the School is capable of presenting multi-disciplinary teams for research into both the basic and applied problems of agriculture, natural resource and food sciences and technology.

Courses

Through the Faculty of NRAVS, the School offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with 12 other Departments also providing subjects for the degrees.
