Curriculum

The curriculum at Carey provides something to challenge stimulate and encourage every student. In Year 11 and 12 students can study either the IB Diploma or VCE programs and have the option of selecting some IB or VCE subjects in Year 10. Students also benefit from a wide range of subject choices and extension activities to make the most of their final years of school. Our students have access to Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects and a University Extension program that allows exploration of academic strengths well beyond the conventional. At Years 7–9 the curriculum provides students with grounding in traditional academic subjects but also offers a range of electives to foster individual interests and abilities. Middle School’s policy of ‘real world learning’ challenges students to explore their physical and emotional boundaries through studying lifestyles and environments different to their own. In Junior School we take a collaborative inquiry-based approach to learning with many opportunities to enrich and extend.

Co-curricular Activities

At Carey we believe in the importance of maintaining a balance between study and recreation. We offer coaching and competition in 25 sports with boys’ teams competing against schools in the APS and girls’ teams competing against schools in both the APS and the AGS Associations. Extensive music and drama programs make full use of Carey’s theatre and performance spaces. Individual and group lessons are available across the range of instruments and vocal styles providing personalised learning fostering creative expression and ensuring close monitoring of students’ skill development. Students can also join a wide range of bands orchestras and choirs to develop their ability to perform as part of an ensemble. Other co-curricular activities include speech training debating chess club media crew Yoga dance bike riding and the St John Ambulance division.

Pastoral Care

The welfare of our students is paramount at Carey and the School is structured to ensure that every student is well supported. Classroom teachers in the Junior Schools and Mentors in Middle and Senior Schools within a House system Have an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with the small group of students in their care together with their families. When necessary students have access to additional support from the School’s registered psychologists chaplains nurses and advisors.

Facilities

Carey’s facilities are purpose-built for age group and activities. The separate Early Learning Centre and Junior Schools at Kew and Donvale include specialist music drama and art facilities as well as play areas. The environment of Middle School provides a small community within the School that underpins our collegiate approach. The Senior School (Years 10–12) has been devised as a campus-style pre-tertiary environment with a variety of spaces for independent study group work social gatherings and relaxation. At every level students are encouraged to take responsibility for their environment and its care. A new Performing Arts Centre and fully equipped theatre accommodate music and drama classes related activities and performance. Sport and Physical Education make extensive use of the gymnasium ovals and the indoor swimming and diving pool at Carey’s 14-hectare sporting complex at Bulleen. An Outdoor Education facility camp Toonallook on the Gippsland Lakes allows students to be introduced to water-based activities and bushcraft.

Technology

A wide range of technology is used throughout the School including digital whiteboards together with an extensive laptop program. Carey constantly monitors advancements in technology. Our Year 5s now use iPads in the classroom following a successful trial of this technology in 2011. An online Learning Management System provides easy access to class notes references and texts and administrative information for students and parents.
