Aboriginal and Indigenous Research at Aboriginal
Studies is offered by Riawunna, Centre for Aboriginal Education. Riawunna is
committed to the advancement of knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres St.
Islander cultures and societies and to the promotion of cross-cultural
understandings, as well as to providing a prominent place within the University
for Indigenous Australian values, traditions and discourses. In
particular, Riawunna provides excellent support for Aboriginal Students. The Centre
maintains close links with the Aboriginal community in On each
campus Riawunna maintains a resource room which houses a collection of books,
articles, and audio-visual materials; the resource rooms are available for use
to all University students and staff. Riawunna
offers an undergraduate major and an honours programme in Aboriginal Studies,
and a research higher degree programme (research MAs and PhDs). The
undergraduate programmes aim to develop a wide understanding of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander cultures and societies as they have continued and
adapted, from ancient times until the present day, as well as an understanding
of issues faced by indigenous cultures and peoples. The programmes consider
these issues in national and international contexts. Whilst many units focus on
broad themes such as education, health and Aboriginal art, the Aboriginal
experience in
Research Riawunna staff have a wide range of active research interests,
and can supervise across a range of projects. We also encourage
interdisciplinary research, and many of our honours and research higher degree
candidates elect to pursue projects that are situated in both Aboriginal Studies
and another discipline, such as sociology, philosophy, english, history, etc.
