Excellence in Education
Xavier College has a proud history as an Australian educational institution and was first opened in 1878. Xavier is a welcoming and close-knit Christian community. Students and staff all feel a strong sense of belonging to a unified school community with the same unambiguous set of Christian values and a consistent underlying philosophy of education. As a Catholic school within the spiritual tradition of St Ignatius LoyolaEarly Years Kindergarten to Year 4 (Burke Hall Studley Park Kew and Kostka Hall Brighton)
The early years are co-educational. We believe a co-educational environment offers significant advantages for children in their early years of learning. Further its introduction at Xavier has greatly benefitted families who prefer that brothers and sisters attend the same school when they are in their beginning years of education. The Early Years Curriculum is based on the Ignatian philosophy and the characteristics of a Jesuit education within the framework and philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). Consistent with the tenets of Jesuit Education the PYP focuses on the growth of the whole child (intellectually spiritually aesthetically socially emotionally and physically) in the classroom and in the wider world.
Years 5-8 (Burke Hall Studley Park Kew and Kostka Hall Brighton)
The middle years curriculum embraces the total development of every student. The curriculum is holistic providing rigour and challenge in its core areas fostering creative expression and talent through the Humanities and Arts programs and enabling students to reach their goals in their physical development through the extensive Health and Physical Education and Sports programs. The curriculum is inclusive of students with special needs providing support as well as extending and enriching gifted students and thereby ensuring the nurturing of talent and potential.
Senior Years (Kew)
The Senior Campus caters for students between Years 9-12. Care of individual students is given a high priority at the Senior Campus. On entry to Year 9 each student is assigned a Head of House and tutor who oversees not only the academic progress of that boy for the final four years of his secondary education but also his well-being and sense of belonging. Broad opportunities exist at the Senior Campus for the education of the whole person which is central to a Jesuit education. These opportunities include: • Ignatian service programs• Retreats and Reflection days. • Public speaking competitions• Artists and writers-in-residence. • Peer leadership through Pastoral programs• Inter-school and House debating• Drama productions with neighbouring schools• Musical soirées concerts and recitals• Dancing classes• A challenging outdoor education programThe diverse activities available to students across Years 9-12 complement the extensive and enriching curricular and co-curricular programs. Technology is very prominent in the broad and stimulating curriculum and students use their personal laptop computer in class and for academic work beyond the classroom in Years 9 - 12.
Boarding School
The Boarding House is situated in a magnificent garden setting surrounded by extensive playing fields. The Boarding House seeks to provide a caring community within which the 76 boys from Years 9 to 12 are encouraged to develop personal leadership skills to become responsible members of the community to strive for excellence and to become ‘men for others’. An innovative pastoral program has been developed to support these aims. The program includes such activities as personal development weekends leadership seminars and opportunities study skills sessions and genuine opportunities to participate in developing Boarding House policies.
