Learning Support Programme

The British International School of Brussels, established in 2000, enables children to benefit from an enriching and challenging educational programme. Mutual respect and tolerance are strong themes of the high-quality educational provision for English speaking children aged 3 to 11. Based on the National Curriculum of England, which includes core subjects of literacy, numeracy, science and ICT, the programme also contains internationally influenced aspects of history, geography and creative subjects as well as music and swimming which are taught by individual specialists. French is introduced in the Reception class and lessons are taught in ability based sets throughout the school to accommodate both beginners and first language French speakers.

A wide variety of extra-curricular activities is offered including ballet, karate, hockey, volleyball, cooking and needlework. The school is housed in two separate premises, one for the Junior Department and for the Infants and Nursery. They both provide an excellent working environment for both staff and children with each classroom having its own interative whiteboard. On each site there is also a library, music room and extensive outside playground, as well as a fully networked computer suite.

All of the full-time staff are British trained, having qualified teacher status, with an overall child / teacher ratio of 10: 1. The school is well located, approximately 3 km east of the city centre, 2km from NATO and 1km from the European Commission area around Schuman, with excellent public transport links. The small class sizes (current average is less than 16) allow a high degree of individual attention. Together with strongly encouraged parental involvement, this gives the school its thriving sense of community for which the school is renowned.

The school has over 90 children representing over 30 different nationalities with over 60% of the children being first language English. Specialist English support teachers provide a carefully structured programme for new entrants who are not fluent in English. Amongst the commonest nationalities there are British, American, and Japanese children as well as German, Danish and Indian. The academic year has approximately 180 school days divided into three terms between early September and early July.

The school day starts at 09: 00 and extends until 15: 25 although some of the younger children finish at 12: 15. To assist working parents there is an extended Garderie provision until 18: 00 each day. Admission is possible at any time of the school year and requires reports from previous schools and an interview. Each application is carefully considered so that the school ensures that entrants can benefit from the extensive educational programme provided.
