Teacher/Pupil ratio 1:9.6 Founded in 1924, we are a non-profit, independent and coeducational day school offering a complete and coherent curriculum for pupils of all nationalities from ages 2-18.

The school is an IB World School accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS). One of the directors is a member of the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC). The school has approximately 2160 pupils located on three sites. Botafogo houses a primary school and the first year of secondary school. The secondary school is based at Urca, close to the Sugar Loaf. The Barra Unit opened in February 2006. It is a major project to establish a 2-18 school in the Barra suburb by 2014. From 2014 onwards, the intake of pupils at Barra has been from age 2 (Pre-Nursery) to age 18 (Class 11 - Year 13).

We aim to cultivate well-informed, open-minded, confident, caring and enquiring young people who strive to do their best. The emphasis on academic achievement is balanced by our concern to meet our pupils' physical, emotional and social needs and to ensure that they are prepared for active and well balanced citizenship.

English is the language of teaching and learning. From Pre-Nursery to Class 9 the programme broadly follows the British National Curriculum. Secondary students are prepared for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The school has a history of creditable results in both IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme and evident success in university entrance worldwide.

Classes are generally small and the school environment is pleasant, well-resourced and stimulating, with a strong focus on health, safety and security. Performing arts, sports, Model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and work experience provide a wide range of co-curricular opportunities. Experiences beyond the school include numerous local day visits and national or international residential trips for most year groups from primary Class 3 upwards.

Our teachers are well-qualified (some 30% being recruited from overseas) and supported by a robust and effective programme of continuing professional development. Foundation stage, primary and secondary education (IPC, UK National Curriculum, IGCSE; and Brazilian curriculum) and secondary – pre-university education (IB and Brazilian curriculum).
