The International School Yangon (ISY) is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities who desire a U. S.education. The School was founded in 1955. The school year comprises 4 quarters extending from August 11 to October 7, October 17 to December 16, January 9 to March 9, and March 12 to June 1.
Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Management elected for 2-year terms by the Parents' Association, the sponsor of the School. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. The School is nonprofit and nonsectarian. It is unofficially permitted to operate by the Myanmar government.
Curriculum: The International School Yangon (ISY) has challenging U. S. based elementary and middle school curricula, and a high school curriculum shaped by the adoption of the International Baccalaureate program (IB). The language of instruction is English with Mandarin, French, and Spanish taught as additional languages. The assessment program includes Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), International School Assessment (ISA), and the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in addition to the broad spectrum of IB exams in grades 11 and 12. The school is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization, and a member of the East and South Asia Council of Schools (EARCOS). The vast majority of ISY graduates are accepted by selective universities in the United States.
Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there is 1 director, 2 principals, 1 IB coordinator, 1 MS coordinator, 2 counselors, and 50 teachers. Classes have 20 to 25 students.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, enrollment was 506 (PK-grade 12).
Facilities: The School consists of 7 buildings on a four-acre site in a residential area of Yangon. The School has a newly expanded, well-equipped library, 2 music rooms, 1 elementary art room, 1 high school art complex, 1 art gallery, 4 computer labs, 1 science lab, 1 theater hall, a lunchroom, and a large multipurpose room. Sports facilities include a playground, a playing field, and two open air, covered basketball/volleyball courts.
Finances: In the 2011-2012 school year, about 98 percent of the School's income derives from school tuition and other fees. The annual tuition rates are: PreK: $7, 946; KG-grade 5: $12, 692; grades 6-8: $13, 292; and grades 9-12: $13, 539. There is a one-time registration fee of $1, 000 and a capital fee of $4, 000 payable by each new student in Kdg. -grade 12. (All fees are quoted in U. S. dollars. )
