CDNIS is located on the south side of Hong Kong Island in Aberdeen overlooking the spectacular backdrop of the Lamma Channel and surrounding islands. Students are nurtured, inspired and challenged in an award-winning designed campus with superb facilities, including a $90 million Arts Complex scheduled for completion in winter 2007. We provide an outstanding curriculum in English, with Putonghua strongly promoted as a second language. The school is particularly strong in the areas of technology, sports and the arts. Lower School Overview The Lower School comprises all students from Pre-Reception to Grade 6 and represents 60 per cent of the student body of CDNIS. Our Reception and Pre-Reception half-day programmes are designed to provide our youngest students with an introduction to school life. The programme offers a varied and "hands on" approach to all the basics, providing a strong foundation in the early years. Students participate in activities and experiences which promote steady growth in their social, behavioural, physical and cognitive development. Included in the regular curriculum are Mandarin, Music and Library, which are taught by specialists. There are up to twenty students in both the morning and afternoon classes, with a full-time teacher and a full-time classroom assistant. The full-day Preparatory programme is a child-centred, activity-based programme. The children enjoy a warm and caring environment where they interact with their peers and nurturing adults in a variety of activities. The activities and experiences provided for the students are designed to capture their interest in learning, encouraging them to be creative and at the same time to satisfy their desire to explore and discover. There are four classes at the Preparatory level with approximately 25 students per class, each with a full-time teacher and a full-time classroom assistant. Included in the regular curriculum the students receive lessons in Mandarin, Music, Computer and Library, which are taught by specialists. From Grade 1 to 6, children are taught following the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP). This course of study concentrates on an inquiry-based approach to learning and encourages students to adopt the attributes of the “Learner Profile”. Classes encompass the basics of Language Arts, Mathematics, Mandarin, Social Sciences, Science, Computer Literacy, Art, Music and Physical Education. French is introduced in Grade 5. The primary goal of the Lower School is to have each child become an independent learner. We want students to excel both academically and personally and to show concern and respect for the School community and the community in which they live. Evaluation and progressive testing is an ongoing process that takes place throughout the year with daily quizzes, participation, projects and homework. Upper School Overview The Upper School comprises all students from Grade 7 to Grade 12. Our current enrollment is 630 students. The Upper School is inspected annually by the Ontario Ministry of Education and is authorized to grant credits for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). From Grade 9 to Grade 12, students follow academic credit courses leading to the OSSD. Each credit course consists of 110 hours of instruction. Student’s study 8 courses per year – 4 per day on a Day 1/Day 2 basis. In order to qualify for an OSSD, a student must earn a minimum of 30 credits, including 18 compulsory credits and 12 optional credits. Students must also complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service and must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). See our Course Calendar for more details. In addition to the OSSD, CDNIS has begun implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, which is designed for students in Grades 11 and 12. In 2007/08, as part of our phase-in plan, students in Grade 11 will take IB Certificate courses in English and Chinese Studies. In 2008/09, all students entering Grade 11 will form the first IB Diploma Program cohort and will take the full complement of courses required. Over the next three years, CDNIS will also phase in the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for students in Grades 7 - 10. In Grades 7 and 8, in addition to the core subjects of Math, English, Science and Social Studies, all students take French, Music, Drama, Chinese Studies, Visual Arts and Health and Physical Education. We take pride in the fact that our achievement levels are very high as we prepare students for the transition from Grade 8 to a university preparatory program that begins in Grade 9. The Upper School will continue to offer the Advanced Placement (AP) program for students in their last year at the school who are not part of the IB phase-in plan.
