Institute of Human Performance

The Institute of Human Performance (IHP) Hong Kong

SprinterThe Institute of Human Performance (IHP) Hong Kong is a multi-dimensional organisation, created to meet the evolving demands on humans performing in modern society. The Institute supports a range of core activities, designed to serve both the University and the broader community, including the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and sports and recreation programmes. All of the activities of the Institute are underpinned by research into human performance, nested under three primary research initiatives: peak performance, physical activity and sport and leisure management. The Institute was created in July 2002 to: " build a world-wide reputation in Human Performance for the University of Hong Kong, by enhancing knowledge and professional practice through sustained excellence in research that informs: outstanding teaching; the development of sporting excellence; and the provision of lifelong recreation activities."

Introduction to Research
Human Performance is an emerging discipline concerned with understanding the factors which diminish or enhance the human capacity to perform. Research at the Institute of Human Performance is driven by a young cohort of scientists from a range of mother disciplines, including physiology, psychology, physiotherapy, leisure management and sport science. Our research mission is to seek excellence and innovation in key areas of human performance research, grounded in a philosophy of collaborative enquiry and driven by the integration of theory with practice. Research in the Institute is strategically organized under three generic themes relevant to human performance - physical activity, peak performance, sport & leisure management. Our intention is to 'draw in', from their presently disparate disciplines, researchers with interests, expertise or skills relevant to the study of human performance, to gradually build multi-disciplinary groups of researchers with common human performance research goals. By focussing our interdisciplinary energy in this way we believe we will generate new, innovative and exciting answers to modern scientific lines of enquiry.

WHAT DO OUR GRADUATES THINK OF US? - Mr. Lui Kwan Yung, Wade

Do you want to have a career that means you work in an office 50 hrs per week? If not, you should decide to enroll in the Bachelor of Science (Sports Science and Leisure Management). At the very beginning in selecting different degrees in the University of Hong Kong, I gave myself two criteria. Firstly, it should include the subjects that I was interested in and secondly, the skills that I learned in the courses should be applicable, relevant and qualify me for the industry. After three years of studying in Institute of Human Performance, both practical and theoretical knowledge were gained through a variety of training and course work experiences. With interactive learning programs and practical experiences, students can develop and explore their own interests in the sport and recreation industry.I am now working with the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club as an Events and Activities Facilitator. My role involves planning, organizing and operating sport and recreation programs and activities for both adults and children. The foundation and broad understandings gained from the BSc (SSLM) have inspired me to plan and organize some unique and exciting activities for the members. The practical and theoretical knowledge gained from the BSc (SSLM) courses have assisted me to develop my career in the leisure industry.
