It provides a British-system education, with the usual academic programme, activities, pastoral care and encouragement of self-discipline. The Principal is a member of HMC. The 16 years of schooling incorporate the work of UK kindergarten, junior and secondary schools, leading to the (I)GCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Average class size is 20, with key subjects taught in sets according to ability. There is a strong ESL programme in small sets in all except the final years and also provision for pupils with special educational needs. Teachers are almost all from UK. All have university degrees and/or certificates of education, and on average they have nine years of teaching experience. All teachers participate in pastoral care and guidance through a House system, with specialized UK and US careers advice available. Students come from 64 countries, the majority having English as their first language. Most go on to higher education, the majority to UK universities, but also to the USA, Italy and elsewhere. The school year runs from early September to late June, Monday to Friday, 08: 45 to 15: 35, with many activities in breaks and after school. Music (choral and orchestral) is particularly strong, with drama, expeditions, many sports and hobbies all encouraged. Field trips, musical tours, Model United Nations etc and various other activities take place throughout the year. The school owns its 14-acre site on the north side of Rome, with 17 school buses serving principal residential areas. Facilities include standard and specialized classrooms, a drama/lecture theatre, a dining hall, a modern library, four computer areas, three art/design studios, six science laboratories, a Design Technology Centre and five sound-proofed music rooms. Sports facilities include an athletics track, football, rugby and cricket fields and all-weather volleyball, basketball, tennis and netball courts. Admission is dependent on interview, tests and reports from previous schools. The Nomentana Junior School is located at Via Spallanzani 12-14, 00161 Rome. |
