ESL Program Introduction

The English Language Institute, a part of University College at The University of Texas at El Paso, is specifically designed to help learners gain functional command of English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The Program operates to meet a number of student goals--to pass the TOEFL and to have a successful academic experience in an American institution of higher learning, to use English in business and other vocational pursuits, and to satisfy language and cultural needs for social interaction with English speakers.

Courses during the fall and spring meet for intensive eight-week sessions to help students learn English in the shortest possible time. In the summer, we offer a super intensive ten-week session which covers a semester, sixteen weeks, of learning material.

In each session, classes meet five hours a day, Monday through Thursday in fall and spring and Monday through Friday in summer. Listening comprehension, reading/writing, grammar, conversation, and study of American culture patterns are stressed.

We also offer individual classes in the evening and Saturdays, and TOEFL preparation for advanced students. TOEFL classes include instruction in language skills in addition to test-taking strategies necessary to achieve a high TOEFL score.

The English only rule is strictly enforced in the classroom. Because of the small class size, students are given individualized attention and have many opportunities to use English actively.

Students completing each session receive a certificate of completion.
