Learning Support Programme
The American International School of Rotterdam is a private, non-profit, day school for boys and girls founded in 1959, for the purpose of providing an English-language education for the international community of southern Holland. The eleven-member school board is composed of representatives of the various nationalities in the school.
The school curriculum is an extension of progressive American methods, modified in order to enrich the student through awareness of his or her international setting. The school offers the International Baccalaureate Programme in the High School. An intensive course is designed to teach English to non-English speaking children. The Dutch language is studied in the elementary school as a cultural approach toward understanding the host county, and French, Spanish and Dutch are offered as foreign languages in the middle and high schools. Specialists provide instruction in PE, art, music, library, drama, science and computer. All members of the faculty are fully certified teachers. Most of them have training beyond the bachelor's degree as well as international experience. There are over 30 nationalities represented at the school; approximately 25% of the students are American. The average length of stay for students is two to three years. School is in session from mid-August until mid-June. Classes begin at 08: 15 and end at 15: 00.
Teacher workshops and competitive athletics within the Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS) help maintain a close working relationship with the other international schools of the area. Class field trips are included in the curriculum.
A purpose-built campus for 500 students was completed in April 1995 and the school became part of Rotterdam's International Education Center, in co-operation with the Japanese School of Rotterdam. The school has 54 instructional areas, three science labs, a sports complex (including sports fields, double gymnasium, rented pool), multi-media center, cafeteria, and is computer-networked. The school wishes to accept all qualified applicants. AISR is accredited by CIS and NEASC.
