Medieval & Early Modern European Studies

The University of Auckland New Zealand

The Centre for Medieval and Early Modern European Studies was established in 2003 with the assistance of a grant from the Vice-Chancellor's Emerging Research Fund.

The Centre brings together members of a number of departments in the Faculty of Arts, the School of Music, and the School of Theology. Their specialisations range from the end of the Roman Empire to the end of the seventeenth century.

The Centre co-ordinates an undergraduate programme (BA minor) and graduate programmes (BA (Hons) and MA). It encourages and supports interdisciplinary research projects. Events organized by the Centre include a seminar series for staff and students and an annual conference.

Medieval & Early Modern European Studies

Medieval and Early Modern European Studies (MEDEMS) is an interdisciplinary subject involving the study of the history, languages and cultures from the end of the Roman Empire to the end of the seventeenth century.

Undergraduate Study

The MEDEMS BA minor enables students interested in Early Europe to organize part of their study around an area rather than a discipline.

A minor in Medieval and Early Modern European Studies includes at least two courses in a European language, and at least one of the core courses.

The core courses are:

ARTHIST 203 Northern European Art 1400-1600

ARTHIST 224 Power and Piety: the Baroque

HISTORY 215 Society and Culture in Early Modern England

HISTORY 219 Medieval Mentalities, Western Europe c.1100-1500

Courses in the following languages are available for students with no previous knowledge: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Ancient Greek and Latin.

Students taking a MEDEMS minor are advised to enrol in courses in a language in their first year. Those who are especially interested in the Medieval period are advised to study Latin.

The remaining three courses for the minor can be chosen from a wide range of courses in the Medieval and/or Early Modern periods offered in the following subjects: Art History, History, Christian Thought and History, English, European Languages and Literatures, Music, and Philosophy.

Graduate Study

The MEDEMS BA (Hons) can consist entirely of courses. It may, alternatively, include a dissertation. It can be completed in two semesters (full-time) or four semesters (part-time).

The pre-requisite is a BA with a major in one of the subjects included in the MEDEMS programme, passed at an appropriate level.

The core course for the BA (Hons) is:

MEDEMS 700 Creating the Past

Drawing on the resources of several departments and schools within the Faculty of Arts, this course explores the ways in which various communities sought to construct their own pasts through imaginative literature, art, and historical writing.

The remaining courses for the BA (Hons) can be chosen from a wide range of courses offered in the following subjects: Art History, History, English, European Languages and Literatures, and Philosophy.

An MA in Medieval and Early Modern European Studies usually consists of a thesis of about 25,000 words. It can be completed in two semesters (full-time) or four semesters (part-time).

The pre-requisite is a MEDEMS BA (Hons) or equivalent degree, passed at an appropriate level.

The Centre's Research Projects

Several interdisciplinary research projects, additional to those of individual members of contributing departments, are attached to the Centre. The participation of graduate and doctoral research students in these projects is welcomed.

Two of the Centre's current projects are concerned with Early Europe as an aspect of New Zealand heritage. These are: the study of Medieval and Early Modern European manuscripts held in New Zealand; and the origins and development of the study of Early Europe in New Zealand universities throughout the twentieth century.

Other projects in progress are 'England and the Lowlands, Cultural Exchanges 1477-1580,' and 'The Literary Culture of Barking Abbey, from its Foundation to the Dissolution.'

Library Resources for the Study of Medieval and Early Modern Europe at Auckland

The University of Auckland's library holdings are good by international standards. Collections of books and periodicals were established in the late nineteenth century, and have been assiduously added to. Data bases include Patrologia Latina and Early English Books Online.

Over forty of the Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in New Zealand are held by

the Auckland City Library. They come from Czechoslovakia, France, England, Scotland, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Other medieval manuscripts are owned by ecclesiastical institutions. Most of these manuscripts have not been much studied. The Auckland City Library also has a substantial collection of incunabula and early printed books.
