Study Fashion Design in New Zealand

Auckland University of Technology

Kere White and Malia Turketo are both third year Fashion degree students at Auckland University of Technology who have won trips overseas during their final year of study. Kere White has had a dream break in his choice of career showing his work at the Mercedes Fashion week in Sydney.

Kere's garments were based on cotton fabric which he designed in a style he says was influenced by the work of artist Jackson Pollock. His collection "For Paint's Sake" was presented as part of the student section of the show, which was sponsored by Cotton Australia. His work was presented along with that of eleven other  students, nine from Australian Universities and two from New Zealand.

The award-winning student receives a grant offered through the Australian Fashion Foundation for presenting the work in cotton. The Cotton Store in Darling Harbor then offers the student the opportunity to become the feature designer at their retail outlet.

Kere's collection represents his interest in the originality of his fabric design and several garments in the collection feature denim on which he has splashed washable, ironable acrylic paint. Here's designs include a snake PVC jacket, hot pants and croc mules, all aimed at producing a sexy menswear collection.

Malia's work also won her an overseas trip - hers to the Versace headquarters in Milan where she is visiting design studios and the latest season's shows.

Malia's award was sponsored by Saks who have liaised with Versace in  setting up the trip of a lifetime for the winner. Students applied for the scholarship with a portfolio of work which was judged by Francis Hooper from World. The scholarship gives students a unique opportunity to travel and to become involved with an international design house.
