Pre-employment / Pre-apprentice

Goughs Institute of Training is a nationally focused private training establishment based in Christchurch that delivers pre-employment training to young people.

Our pre-employment programmes will ensure that graduates will be industry focused and prepared for entering the workplace environment.  Graduates will have the best foundation for adding value to their future career opportunities.

Apprenticeships

Goughs is the Caterpillar dealership for New Zealand. We support a wide cross-section of industries across many markets including forestry, construction, mining, quarrying, agriculture, roading, road transport, power generation and marine propulsion.

Goughs has a network of 15 branches nationwide and employs 393 staff directly in the Caterpillar Business Unit, including over 50 apprentices at any one time.

We are committed to the consistent delivery of quality sales, service and product support.  In order for us to support our customers, we need to prepare for the future.  Goughs believe that today's Apprentices are it's future and that is why we continue to recruit and train the very best people for the job.

Why be a Diesel Mechanic?

World-wide, Caterpillar dealers are seeking approximately 5000 tradesmen to support their workshops. Adding to this, all other heavy machinery manufacturers are looking for Diesel Mechanics and New Zealand is no exception.

Successfully completing a Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship with Goughs would almost guarantee you a job for life.  Your skills will be in demand industry-wide because of continuous on-the-job training, Caterpillars technology advantage, and Goughs reputation for service excellence.

Becoming a Diesel Mechanic is by no means a dead-end job - it's just the beginning of your career. The Career Map shows huge opportunities for the future. The world is your oyster!

Will I get bored?

Mechanical trades and especially the diesel mechanic trade, are now very high tech. It includes some very advanced electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and fuel systems. Some equipment has up to 7 electronic control units (computers) on board to manage and display information or to control systems.

The awesome size and power of some of our machines will keep you interested. Some engines produce over 1000 horsepower and can do it all day, every day of the year. Some of our equipment has the power to move mountains!

Unlike a car mechanic who works most of the day in a workshop on the same model of car, a diesel mechanic will work on a wide variety of equipment which could be in any location around the country or world.

One day you may be working on a boat in the middle of the ocean...The next day on a generator on the mountain top...And the day after working on underground mining equipment...

Post Trade/Technical

In todays economic and technological environment, a competent work force is a must. Competent and knowledgeable maintenance staff will ensure:
  • Minimum downtime of your machines;
  • Repair costs are minimized;
  • Your equipment will reach projected lifespan.

The training needs of trades people within Goughs and industry clients can be broadly divided into two areas:

  1. There is a need for individuals working in the industry to be familiar with basic products and systems that they will be exposed to in the workplace. This often means retraining an existing workforce when new machines or technology are introduced.
  2. There is a need to provide training on specific product and equipment systems. This specialised training is designed to teach maintenance know-how as well as testing and diagnostic techniques.

Our post trade learning programmes are developed to ensure trades people remain up to dade with technical skills and current emerging technology.

Operator Development

Our Operator Development Trainers offer an extensive range of courses and assessments that will provide operators with skill levels that will improve productivity, decrease downtime, reduce operating costs, and enhance safety. This will result in a positive return on your training investment.  Our trainers will:
  • Initially assess operator tasks, and identify training needs;
  • Implement operator development training;
  • Perform final assessment and review.

Plant Operation

In today's world of high technology, equipment operators must have a thorough understanding of machine systems to achieve maximum efficiency and greatest return on equipment investment.

Increasing your profit margin starts with the right equipment; but knowing how to use that equipment can ultimately improve your bottom line.

An extensive range of machine operation courses and assessments are available through the Operator Development Trainers to ensure operators can competently and safely operate machines with maximum efficiency.

Courses for small machines such as skid steer loaders, mini excavators and backhoes and large machine courses are delivered on site at our branches, or by prior arrangement at the customers site.

Up to date and relevant training aids ensure that all aspects of machine safety and operation are addressed.

All courses can be tailored to meet customer and job specific requirements.
