Our helicopter training school is New Zealand owned and operated in and is located in the beautiful North Island. As the closest helicopter training school to Auckland city, we are less than 20 minutes drive from the Central Business District, giving you easy access to the city, the East and West Coast beaches as well as the fantastic scenery of the winterless north.

At Norwest Helicopter Training School, we have the advantage of conducting our helicopter training from a private property rather than an airfield. This helps us reduce costs to the student by eliminating many landing fees. As a helicopter pilot, you dont spend a lot of time at airfields; neither do we. Your helicopter training takes place in the real world environment.

R22 helicopter training

Norwest Helicopter Training School uses the Robinson R22 for all our helicopter training. The R22, unsurpassed in reliability, high cruise speed, manoeuvrability and low operating costs, has gained worldwide popularity as a great machine for helicopter training.

Benefits of our helicopter school

Our great location enables us to expose our students to a wide range of experiences whilst enjoying their helicopter training. As a student at the helicopter school, you will be exposed to multiple Control Zones, New Zealand's busiest aerodrome (Ardmore) and our largest International Airport (Auckland). Your helicopter training will also take you through military airspace (Whenuapai), and into heavily forested and native bush areas where you will discover what a helicopter can really do. Confined area operations, sling load training and mountain flying techniques are par for the helicopter training course, along with emergency procedures, cross country navigation and low level flying. Our great helicopter training style, will well prepare you for your first job as a Commercial Helicopter Pilot! Training for a Night endorsement can be added to your helicopter training for your helicopter pilot licence, as can Type Ratings for other piston and/or turbine engine helicopters. Additional training for an Instructor rating is also an option.

The Chief Flying Instructor of our helicopter school has over 30 years experience in aviation and has been conducting helicopter training for many years. He has a military background and over 10,000hrs flight time.
