 Study Business in New Zealand

Otago University

-an Unlimited Future with Unlimited Possibilities

Today's business world is highly competitive, complex and dynamic. The need for business students to grasp business issues is now more relevant than ever. But where should students study? The decision is easy - the University of Otago's School of Business.

Outstanding programmes

Set among the historic halls of the University of Otago in Dunedin, the School of Business (founded 1912) comprises seven departments -Accountancy and Business Law, Economics, Finance and Quantitative Analysis, Information Science, Management, Marketing and Tourism. Together they offer students a comprehensive education in all aspects of business and commerce.

The School also acknowledges the significant advantage continuing education brings to the world of business and offers extensive post-graduate and executive education programmes including a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Business Administration (New Zealand's only full-time MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (based in Auckland), Master of Business, Master of Commerce, Master of Tourism and numerous post-graduate diplomas.

Of note, the School of Business is the only university in New Zealand to have its MBA programme rank in the top 100 MBA programmes in the world (The Financial Times, 2001; The Economist Intelligence Unit, 2002). Its MBA ranks in the top eight programmes in the Asia-Pacific region, alongside schools in Melbourne, Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The School recently launched the Master of Entrepreneurship, a 15-month programme designed for graduates and aspiring entrepreneurs. The intensive programme is taught in three-day blocks and includes a business project. John Bell, the Director of the programme, says the course is "ideally suited to a graduate who has been out for a few years and has an idea they would love to put into practice. It's equally valuable as a grounding for those who aspire to the entrepreneurial lifestyle."

Innovative research

The School of Business has an active and innovative research programme involving staff, students and local businesses. Recent research explored the impact of genetic modification on New Zealand's 'clean, green' image, the economics of national defence, the correlation between tourism and migration, primary school children's understanding of money, and New Zealand's international competitiveness.

State-of-the-art facilities

There are also excellent facilities available to students. The School is housed in a state-of-the-art modern structure purpose-built for the division. Completed in 1993, the building features natural ventilation, electric heating managed via a computerised energy management system (very important during Dunedin's winter) and 24-hour access for students. There are nearly 400 computers and 20 printers available to students at any time.

Strong reputation

A testimony to the School of Business is its reputation within the wider business community. The School is actively involved with local business through its Board of Advisors, made up of prominent and well-respected members of New Zealand's business community, and its Executive Mentoring Programme through which established business executive 'partners' work alongside students providing crucial careers and development advice. Many of these mentors are alumni of the School of Business.

Internationally recognised

The School also has strong links with universities throughout the world and offers student exchanges to more than 30 international business schools.

In recognition of its international reputation, the School of Business was recently invited to join the Program in International Management (PIM), an elite consortium of international business schools, and the Pacific Asian Consortium for International Business Education and Research (PACIBER). The School is also a member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). These associations assist the School to achieve world class business education standards and provide quality and unique experiences for staff, faculty and alumni.

With world-renowned courses, exceptional teaching staff and excellent facilities, the School of Business outstrips the competition. A graduate of University of Otago's School of Business has a future with unlimited possibilities.
