Study Sport and Exercise Science in New Zealand Waikato Polytechnic New Zealand
Kaisa Jannes hails from
Finland and has been living
in New Zealand for five
months with the intention of
staying for three years to complete her
Bachelor in Sport and Exercise Science
at The Waikato Polytechnic.
"The first thing that attracted me to
New Zealand was the weather. I am
from a really cold country and I love
the sun. It's amazing how such a small
country can be so diverse in terms of
its natural environment. You can go
surfing and skiing on the same day."
Kaisa dreamt of an overseas education.
After working for two years she decided to return to school. Browsing
through the internet she found the
Waikato Polytechnic web site and was
attracted by the modern Sport and
Exercise Science Centre with its state
of the art equipment. Enthusiastic
about an applied degree programme,
she requested enrolment papers and
soon found herself accepted and on her
way to New Zealand.
The degree is broad based and offers
students the opportunity of specialising in the third year in exercise
physiology, sport psychology, injury prevention and rehabilitation, biomechanics,
advanced coaching or sport nutrition. Students have the choice of a narrower
third year involving a research project and professional studies or a broad
degree covering more sub-discipline in the final year.
"I really enjoyed the programme and the lifestyle in New Zealand that I find
relaxed and friendly. New Zealand is my kind of country and I am completing a programme that is interesting." Other qualifications in the sport and fit- ness industry covered within the
Centre are a two- year certificate in Sport Studies that assist pre-elite
athletes under- stand the sport sciences in order to improve their athletic performance.
The Diploma in Personal Fitness Training builds on the sport science knowledge and
adds the necessary professional skills qualifying graduates for positions in the health and life-
style industry as a well-qualified personal trainer. Both of these qualifications can be cross-credited to
the degree programme.
