Catholic Girls' College New Zealand

St Mary's College

Welcome to St Mary's College. This is a Catholic Mercy College which offers an excellent education for girls, following in the spirit and values of Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy who are our Proprietors.

We aim to provide an education which will enable each student to have a life-long love of learning and the desire and skills to make a difference in society. We expect our students to work to a high standard at all times.

Each subject area offers a variety of extension programmes to enrich the learning of our students. Form Teachers, or the Year Level Dean, will inform parents if any problems arise. Reports are posted home and Parent-Teacher interviews are held during the year, to enable parents to meet with the teaching staff.

All students are encouraged to be involved in at least one of the numerous co-curricular activities which St Mary's offers. These activities help students to develop their social and leisure skills, as well as enabling students to play an active part in fostering "School Spirit".

We welcome parent participation, interest and active involvement. This can be by serving as a member of one of our parent organisations, as a manager or coach of one of our sports or cultural team.

Support/Homestay:

St Mary's College has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz .

HEALTH AND TRAVEL INSURANCE:

Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:
  • A resident or citizen of Australia; or
  • A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or
  • The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment. You have to have insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. St Mary's College will arrange travel and medical insurance for you.

IMMIGRATION:Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.immigration.govt.nz.

Homestay, with a New Zealand family, is compulsory for all international students for the duration of their study. This is arranged by St Mary's College Homestay Manager,  who also arranges airport transfer (Refer to homestay Policy)

Homestay Policy

Rationale:International students are at school on a study visa, which is only issued if they are guaranteed appropriate accommodation.

Purpose:

  1. To provide a suitable environment conducive to study.
  2. To involve a family in the welfare of a student away from the student's family.
  3. To provide meals, do laundry and generally meet the student's needs so everyday pressures of life do not affect the student's study.
  4. To give the student an experience of the New Zealand way of life.
  5. To allow the overseas parents peace of mind knowing that the student is well and happy in this country, as a member of a New Zealand family.
  6. To keep the student safe by monitoring out-of-school activities.

Guidelines:

  1. Students must be in a homestay approved by St Mary's College Homestay Manager and monitored by that person.
  2. The annual homestay payment must be made in full to St Mary's College who will administer the payments to the homestay families.
  3. Students are not permitted to own or rent a flat/room/house/apartment or live on their own.
  4. Students are not permitted to own or drive a car.
  5. If there are problems in a particular homestay, the student must, first of all, discuss them with the Dean and the International Student Administrator.
  6. Should the problems persist, the Homestay Manager should arrange for a change of homestay. St Mary's College must be notified by the student and the Homestay Manager.
  7. Students must not make their own private homestay arrangements while in an approved homestay.
  8. Students are required to exhibit appropriate behaviour at all times.
