The Regent School, Abuja, Nigeria

The Regent School is a co-educational primary school for children aged from two to eleven years based upon the British curriculum. The purpose-built campus, opened in 2000, comprises a self-contained Early Years department for pupils aged 2-5 and Key Stage 1 and 2 departments for pupils aged 6-11 years. Altogether there are 18 air-conditioned classrooms with additional specialist rooms including an ICT laboratory. The school structure is based on two classes per year group and currently has 300 pupils, 70% of whom are Nigerian with the remainder from 26 other nationalities. The maximum class size is 20 pupils.
The school curriculum is based upon the English National Curriculum and it is adapted to include appropriate elements of Nigerian studies, and topics relating to the continent of Africa. Children are prepared for British SATs exams and the Nigerian Common Entrance exam. Most children will also sit entrance exams for senior schools in the UK or Nigeria.
In a positive and child-focussed environment the school seeks to allow children to develop their potential. Teachers and their assistants work closely together to plan and monitor the curriculum, thus ensuring consistency across classes in each year group and continuity and progression as children move up through the school.
The school is set in landscaped grounds, which include dedicated play and sports facilities. A new European style soccer pitch and multi-marked sports surface has recently been opened.
The school has an active PTA and encourages parental partnership in the learning process. There is a regular programme of reporting to parents and opportunities for both formal and informal meetings between parents and teachers. The school has a strong commitment to extra-curricular activities and a programme of over 25 clubs and activities takes place each week.
