Learning Support Programme
Aiglon College, founded in 1949, offers a well-rounded education in a secure and friendly international community. It is a member of the Round Square and is registered as a charitable trust in Switzerland, the UK, Canada, USA and Holland. Aiglon is an independent, non-profit, co-educational, international boarding school run on British independent school lines with an enrolment of 50+ nationalities. It is situated at an altitude of 1200m on a 25-acre alpine site 80 minutes drive from Geneva. There are four houses for girls and four boys [two of which form the Junior School] each with its own houseparents. The teacher/student ratio is 1: 6 and on average we have 8-10 students in each class. Facilities include an indoor sports centre, a computer centre, eight laboratories for science and languages, a library, and specialist art and music facilities.
The school is divided into a Junior School (ages 9-13) and Senior School (13-18); courses are taught in English except with French taught as a compulsory language up to age 16. The curriculum in the Junior School consists of English, French, History, Geography, Mathematics, General Science, Computer Literacy, Art, Music, Drama and Religious Studies. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, German, and Spanish are added in the Senior School. Fifth form students follow eight or nine courses leading to (I)GCSE level. In the sixth form two year courses lead to the IB Diploma which may qualify for advanced placement at colleges in the United States. The school is also a centre for the College Board and Cambridge International Examinations. Almost all graduates go on to universities and colleges in the USA, UK and Europe.
The academic programme is rigorous and is complemented by pastoral care and a challenging programme of sports and outdoor activities. Sports include skiing, basketball, tennis, soccer, athletics, gymnastics, swimming and volleyball. Expeditions into the mountains take place at weekends throughout the year. Cultural, ski touring and camping long expeditions take place at different times in the school year. Service and responsibility are fostered through social service projects amongst the local Swiss community and through the Round Square organization world-wide. All students perform house tasks in accordance with their age and capacity. Emphasis is placed on firm bur fair discipline. Admission is through Aiglon’s entrance examination, interview and previous school record. Scholarships may be awarded to candidates of outstanding merit.
