School Summary:
National, IB, curricula.
The International School of Tanganyika, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school offering 14 years of English Language medium schooling for students aged four to 19 years. It is governed by a Board of Directors, elected for three-year terms of office by the parents.
The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students from the international community of Dar es Salaam, for the majority of whom English is a foreign language. The programme of studies maintains academic standards comparable to those in other large international schools and in the national schools of Europe and North America.
There are 100 fully qualified teachers from 20 countries; more than half have been recruited from the UK and another 20 from the USA. IST is assisted by the Office of Overseas Schools of the US Department of State and is accredited by CIS and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. IST enrols 870 students, representing 62 nationalities. IST is a fully accredited IBO school offering the Primary Years Programme at Elementary level and the Middle Years Programme at Secondary level. The final two years at IST include the International Baccalaureate programme, a rigorously academic pre-university course of study. Ninety-five per cent of graduates go on to higher education.
The school year begins in late August and consists of four terms. There is an extensive optional afternoon activities programme offering sports, art and crafts, music, computers, field trips and community service.
IST is located on three campuses (ECC, Elementary and Secondary). Facilities include 80 classrooms, two auditoriums, two infirmaries, two gymnasia, two playing fields, three swimming pools, seven science labs, two computer labs, two libraries, an AV theatre, a purpose-built studio theatre, an administration block and a music and drama complex.
