School Summary:
National, IB, curricula.
The Iringa International School was started in 1993 by a group of expatriate and local parents in Iringa to provide a sound, internationally-acceptable education for their children in the Southern Highlands region of Tanzania. It is a parent-involved, non-profit-making school run by a Board of Management elected annually from among the body of parents.
The Iringa International School started as a Primary School with 12 students and two full-time teachers, and has since added on a Kindergarten, Middle School, IGCSE (Key Stages 1-4) and boarding facilities. It plans to go on to 'A' levels and IB in stages.
At present the school is very small (maximum 10 children to a class) co-educational, offering very individualised teaching and learning to children of all backgrounds, religions, races and nationalities.
IIS uses the National Curriculum of England & Wales, and its language medium is English. Its philosophy is the holistic approach to child education. The vision of the school is to prepare the students for an educated and responsible contribution to a global community, in their role as world citizens.
Subjects taught are: English, maths, science(s), history, geography, art, music, religious and social education, information technology, craft and design technology, French, Swahili and sports.
There is a small library and computer lab, football, basketball, volleyball and badminton grounds, with a separate play area for the Kindergarten. It offers a variety of other clubs such as journalism, football, book, astronomy, Greek, chess, karate, drama, dance and movement. Extra-curricular activities include hiking, scouts, outdoor activities, visiting wildlife parks, community involvement, environmental conservation projects and survival skills.
The school is situated in a quiet, pleasantly shady suburb in Iringa town, within walking distance of the town centre.
