Learning Support Programme
The Koc School was founded by the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Turkey’s leading philanthropic organization, and is named after Vehbi Koç, the country’s most prominent industrialist. The High School/Lise opened in 1988. The Elementary School was opened in 1998.
The faculty of 302 includes approximately 75% Turkish nationals and 25% foreign teachers, ranging in experience from a few years to over three decades. A normal teaching load is up to 24 class periods per week out of 40 plus activity and supervisory duties. Because of Turkish curriculum requirements, the majority of foreign-hire teachers work in the Middle and High Schools. Only EFL and 4th/5th grade math and science are taught by foreigners at the primary level.
Admission for Turkish citizens is through a lottery in grades K-2 and competitive examination thereafter. The school currently ranks among the most popular schools in Turkey. A very small number of international students are admitted each year on the basis of academic records, recommendations from their previous schools and English proficiency.
The school’s 200-acre campus is located 18 miles east of Istanbul, which is one of the world’s most dynamic cities. It is 15 miles north of the Sea of Marmara, and 30 miles south of the Black Sea. A recently completed stretch of the Istanbul-Ankara superhighway is 2 miles from the entrance of the school. A new airport has been opened near the school, as has a Formula 1 race track.
The high school buildings were constructed in 1988 and have recently been completely renovated. All are connected and centered on an enclosed courtyard, and include two four-storey classroom wings, library, 1, 100-seat auditorium, dining hall, gymnasium, infirmary and separate dormitories for boys and girls.
The Elementary School was completed in 1998 and includes a kindergarten, classrooms, science and computer laboratories, arts and activities rooms, library, gymnasium, 600-seat auditorium and cafeteria. A new wing of the Elementary School opened in September 2006, further expanding the facilities of the building. Playing fields and lighted tennis courts are adjacent. The faculty housing complex and Social Center are a 5-minute walk from the school buildings. Although security has not been a major problem, the campus is fenced and access is controlled by a manned gatehouse. A Pre-School program began in 1998, primarily for children of foreign-hire teachers, with a current enrolment of 12 children, aged 3-5.
