SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
The college is situated in eastern metropolitan Auckland, was opened in
1961, serves a middle to more affluent socio-economic community and has
consistently been intended as a relatively small city secondary school.
This feature provides for a caring community, while being close to the
central city. The multi-cultural composition of the school is a further
major strength.

state secondary school, with a Ministry of Education approved enrolment
scheme. There is a strong enrolment interest. To prevent possible
overcrowding the enrolment scheme includes a geographic zone for as of
right entry applicants. Enrolment applications from outside of the zone
are received and a ballot system decides the allocation of any available
placements.
The Ministry of Education's socio-economic criteria
establishes Glendowie College as a decile 9 secondary school, and
includes the suburbs of Glendowie, St Heliers, Kohimarama (south east),
and St Johns Park. The current approximate ethnic composition of the
college is New Zealand European 66 %, Asian 24 %, Pasifika 6 %, and
Maori 3 %, Others 1%.
Additional to the community enrolment, the college
accepts an annual maximum of 5% of the domestic roll in foreign fee
paying students and who are mostly senior students from a diversity of
countries. The enrolment and well-being of these students is managed by
the Director of International Students and with the support of an
International Student Administration Assistant. Glendowie College's
international marketing strategy for international students is
facilitated by a select consortium group of leading Auckland education
providers and works closely with Trade New Zealand. To further enhance
the cultural diversity of Glendowie College, international students from
AFS, Rotary International and YFU are selected for senior school
enrolment.
The college buildings are surrounded on two sides by
spacious and well maintained playing fields. An attractive inner central
courtyard with mature trees provides a focal meeting point for students.
At the rear of the main buildings are raised banks planted with maturing
trees, which provide a popular seating and shade area for students in
fine weather. In recent years improved seating and shade areas have been
established in several areas, funded by the Parents' Association and
other donors. The facilities of the college are also used by the East
City Community Education Programme for community adult education.
