School Introduction
UCSC Extension is the only University of California facility in the heart of Silicon Valley. The world’s most innovative tech companies, such as Google, Yahoo!, HP, Adobe and Cisco Systems, are a short drive away. ELI has established strong relationships with many of these companies, ensuring that our students have access to outstanding business opportunities.
The ELI campus is located in downtown Santa Cruz, just blocks from the beach. Centered around Pacific Avenue, with its numerous restaurants and outdoor cafés, downtown Santa Cruz is a cosmopolitan town featuring a lively, vibrant atmosphere. Unique shops and boutiques offer an exciting shopping experience, while galleries, theaters and cinemas give everyone the opportunity to appreciate the thriving local arts scene.
Safe and friendly, with a moderate climate, Santa Cruz is a small, picturesque city whose residents warmly welcome visitors from all over the world. Santa Cruz is very proud of its miles of beautiful, clean, sandy Pacific Ocean beaches—perfect for surfing, volleyball and sunbathing. Nearby, coastal mountains and redwood forests provide an additional wealth of opportunities for sports and recreation.
ELI students can use the UCSC swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness center, basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts, computer labs, and much more. The main campus is a 15-minute bus ride from the University Town Center, which houses ELI and the dorms. ESL Program Introduction
Our Intensive English Program is among the best in the United States. We offer 5- and 10-week sessions in fall, winter and spring and 4- and 8-week sessions in summer. You can choose an intensive session, where you will be immersed in English through grammar, listening, speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary. You will also be able to choose from many elective courses in areas such as American Pop Culture, Global Marketing or TOEFL Preparation. We encourage our students to customize their Intensive English schedules to meet their individual needs. So whether you need classes in business management, academic preparation or computer skills, our range of classes will allow you to design the perfect program.
You will be placed in classes with students at the same English level, ensuring that you are comfortable with the pace of the classes. At all levels, you will find small classes that provide a comfortable and interactive learning environment. Students from many countries will enroll with you in the program, so besides learning English, you will make lasting friendships with students from all corners of the world.

UNIVERSITY TOWN CENTER DORMITORY- Modern studio apartments in beautiful downtown Santa Cruz are in the same building as our classrooms and only steps away from restaurants, cafés and the beach. UTC is located in clean and friendly downtown Santa Cruz. Everything you need is located in one modern building—UCSC studio apartments, classrooms, computer labs, student lounges and administrative offices. All rooms at UTC are double occupancy, have a private bath and full kitchen, high-speed DSL and cable service and are shared by both ELI international students and UCSC students. HOMESTAY-Staying with a host family is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will allow you to practice your English, experience American family life and make life-long friendships. We place students with pre-screened local families—all of whom live within 20 to 30 minutes of UTC—who truly enjoy hosting students from all over the world. You can choose a traditional homestay option, which includes meals, or a room-only option, which is appropriate for more independent students.
