School Introduction

Founded in 1979, the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) is a leader in the field of English as a Second Language and ranks among the top ESL programs in the United States. The ELI offers a variety of high-quality, intensive English programs for degree-seeking students, business and legal professionals, language teachers, and general English language learners. The ELI is one of the few ESL programs accredited by the Commission of English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). The ELI is a member of the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), organizations that promote high professional standards of quality in English programs and maintain rigorous review processes. Our program is also a leading teacher training center, having introduced hundreds of English teachers from over 40 countries to best practices in language instruction and program administration.

The ELI's Intensive English Program offers a wide selection of courses to meet your specific goals, English proficiency level, and schedule. Six two-month sessions of study are scheduled each year. (It is possible to study at the ELI for one month.) Our intensive 240-hour curriculum is designed to help students advance one proficiency level in eight weeks. Through this program, ELI offers over 30 core courses and electives in six levels of study, beginner to advanced. Students who place in Level I, II, or III develop basic language skills: listening, speaking, pronunciation, oral and written grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing. At the higher proficiency levels (Level IV, V, and VI), students may select courses from among four tracks of English for Specific Purposes courses: English for Academic Purposes, General English, English through American Culture, and Business English.

The ELI's specialized programs have become so popular and well respected, they have received grants from both US Government agencies and educational organizations worldwide. If you are a lawyer, business professional, EFL teacher, university of MBA applicant, we have a specialized course for you.
