School Introduction

The American Collegiate English (ACE) Program, located in El Cajon, which lies east of scenic San Diego in Southern California, is a non-credit, pre-collegiate program which provides English and TOEFL preparatory instruction to intermediate level nonnative speakers of English who wish to improve their English skills in order to attend an American college or university. ACE prepares students for success in their college studies in the U.S. ACE also offers a smooth transition to Grossmont College. After students complete an ACE session and achieve a TOEFL iBT score of 45, they may immediately transfer to Grossmont College. New to the program is the ACE conditional enrollment agreement with Grossmont College. Students who fulfill the conditional enrollment standards during an eight-week session of ACE are eligible to enter Grossmont College without a TOEFL score because they have demonstrated that they have the English proficiency and study skills necessary to succeed in college. Students who attend Grossmont College, which is a two-year public institution where students may earn associate degrees and certificates in many different fields of study, may elect to transfer to a university after studying at Grossmont for two years. Grossmont has transfer agreements with the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU), both of which are but a short drive from Grossmont College.

ESL Program Introduction

The American Collegiate English (ACE) Program at Grossmont College is an intensive English language and TOEFL preparatory program that offers five eight-week sessions a year. Each session consists of twenty hours per week of intermediate-level English instruction in grammar, academic writing, listening and speaking, pronunciation, reading and vocabulary development, and TOEFL iBT. ACE instructors are college and university trained professionals. ACE instructors are also native speakers of English, and each teacher has a master's degree in TESOL or applied linguistics. ACE class sizes are small, from 10 to 15 students, which allows for more individualized instruction. In addition, ACE provides access to our computer lab with TOEFL practice and Internet and e-mail access, access to all Grossmont College student services, including International Student Club activities, an ID card and benefit card, and the I-20 for a student visa.
