School Introduction

Founded in 1969, Academia was the first english language school in Hawaii. We remain the largest and most popular english language school in Hawaii due to the quality of our instruction, our wide selection of classes, and our focus on helping each student design a custom program that meets their individual goals.

We offer many different English classes for all levels of students, TOEFL and TOEIC test preparation, English Plus programs and work experience programs. We believe in making the learning experience at Academia fun so in addition to using an interactive and enjoyable teaching methodology we also plan many activities and field trips for our students.

Academia is proud of its faculty. Faculty members have degrees from top US schools including Harvard University, University of Chicago and UC Berkeley. A wide range of teaching experience is represented with half of the faculty having taught at the university level and almost all having taught in a non-English speaking country.

The campus is an 8 minute walk from the famous Waikiki Beach and a 3 minute walk from the Ala Moana Shopping Center.

ESL Program Introduction

Beginning students can take grammar, conversation, vocabulary and/or pronunciation. Intermediate and advanced students have a wide range of courses to choose from. Courses in grammar, conversation, vocabulary and/or pronunciation can be supplemented with comprehensive courses that combine all language skills around a theme, such as business, Hawaiian arts or world cultures. Advanced students may participate in a Practicum where they get experience speaking English in a actual work environment. TOEIC, TOEFL and Cambridge preparation are offered. Students can further sharpen targeted skills through courses devoted to listening, pronunciation or high level grammar.

Students with student visas can take as many courses as they want with no extra charge. With classes scheduled from 7:30 am to 8:20 pm, there are many choices.

There are annual school-wide activities such as an American style picnic (hot dogs, horseshoes, volleyball and music), a Halloween Party and field trip opportunities. There are many class outings to local events such as surfing competitions, events, and sites such as Pearl Harbor, botanical gardens and waterfall hikes.
