School Introduction
At the International English Institute, you are more than just a student – you are a part of the IEI family. Since 1977, our experienced faculty and staff have offered a personalized English study experience at an accredited, private institution with small classes, weekly activities and trips, and opportunities to meet and interact with Americans. Student Services: From the day you apply to IEI, our student services are the difference. We are committed to helping you feel comfortable in Middle Tennessee, your home away from home. With advance notice, our administrative staff can arrange placement with one of our American host families to provide a unique opportunity for daily English practice. We can also provide assistance in locating other types of housing.
At the beginning of your first term at IEI, you will receive a complete orientation program to our school and to American culture. If you come to IEI on a student visa, we are ready to counsel and assist you in maintaining your visa status. Emergency assistance and counseling for personal concerns is always available.
The IEI difference doesn’t end in the classroom – you will have weekly opportunities for cultural and social activities, such as parties, theater and sports events, and trips around Tennessee and the surrounding states. Plus, you’ll have numerous opportunities to meet and talk with American conversation partners.
ESL Program Introduction
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced speaker of English, our classes make the difference that can help you progress quickly. Our small classes allow for maximum individual attention, and our teachers are qualified, caring professionals who share a common goal of helping you to succeed.
We assess each individual student’s English language needs and plan a program to meet these needs. You will be tested and interviewed when you arrive to determine your proficiency levels in speaking, listening, writing, grammar, and reading. We will then recommend the appropriate classes for your personal abilities and needs.
IEI’s curriculum is divided into six levels. Levels 1 through 5 provide a basic foundation in English for all students. Level 6 allows a student to concentrate on advanced English skills necessary for particular academic, professional, and personal needs. Students can prepare for the TOEFL, MELAB, or TOEIC tests through a solid knowledge of English and practice in test-taking techniques. Our program prepares you linguistically for success in university or business through concentration on reading, writing, listening and note-taking, and discussion skills, all while perfecting your structure through our grammar classes.
Full-time students receive twenty-five hours of instruction per week for seven weeks per term with an appropriate balance of group and individual work. Serious students who attend all classes, complete homework assignments, and attempt to speak only English inside and outside the classroom can expect to complete a level during each seven-week term.
