School Introduction

ASEC is intensive English study for full or non-credit seeking students preparing to complete an American university degree program. Students at ASEC are accepted as full-time students to Southern Nazarene University so no TOEFL is required. Scholarships are available during the intensive program for every student for 1/2 of tuition costs. All students live with an American roommate, have an American college student mentor, have an American host family, and attend events with college-aged Americans weekly. On-campus jobs are available for those wanting to work. Two leveled 8-week modules are available each semester as well as two in summer. Students receive a free lap-top computer, have free on-campus medical care, free wireless internet, free work-out gym and swimming pool and free writing tutors. Our cafeteria will prepare food from any country if recipes are provided. All students participate in on-campus social groups such as the campus newspaper, yearbook, or intermural sports teams. Students who choose to may earn an associate's degree or minor in English as a Foreign Language by attending the intensive English classes. If a degree path is chosen, the student's transcript will reflect the additional degrees earned in the intensive English program. ASEC is located in the heart of the friendly US midwest in Oklahoma City's suburb of Bethany.

ESL Program Introduction

Students in ASEC study vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar as well as attend a one hour reading lab and a one hour listening lab for a total of 30 hours of instruction weekly. The vocabulary and reading are based on the university word list and general service list so that students will know the specific academic vocabulary necessary for the classes in their major courses. Writing assignments, presentations and class discussions following traditional university class patterns are used to enculturate students to the American academic community. Students must interact with Americans as a requirement for each level of proficiency. This part of the curriculum is done outside of class and students keep a writing journal documenting their experiences with their American mentors, roommates, and host families as well as their on-campus social groups. At the end of the intensive program, student pass the Michigan Test as well as a speaking and writing proficiency test. Students accepted into masters programs at the university may be required to attain a higher score on these tests, but neither undergraduate nor graduate students need a TOEFL score to enter the university programs.

Housing/Accommodation Info

Our on-campus housing is arranged by our international student advisor and the head of on-campus housing. If students wish to live off-campus, the international student advisor can assist with this also.
