Sound reinforcement systems are used in many environments, ranging from large area systems to small sound systems used by single entertainers, and public address  systems for background music and announcements. Trained professionals skilled in sound system design and installation are required in all  countries to fit and maintain these systems. Often overlooked, sound system contractors are in high  demand, offering a stable and challenging career path.

The television and motion picture industries  all require a variety of trained sound recording and mixing  personnel, as there are several distinct  areas for working with sound for picture. Location sound recordists are required to capture the sounds of a performance  and its environment. Often coping with the extremes of weather on location and odd hours of work, it is these diligent professionals we can thank for much of the  natural sound associated with picture. Skilled location recordists have amongst the best ears of those in the sound engineering fraternity, often honing their critical listening skills over decades.

All the efforts of the location sound recordists would come to nothing if not for  the efforts of post-production sound engineers and editors. All of the recorded sound on location must be meticulously  edited and synchronised with the pictures  before the movie can be assembled. There are audio professionals who specialise in re-recording dialog or 'foley' sound effects. During the final stages of assembling the motion picture or television feature, there are three distinct disciplines drawn upon - specialist sound engineers must mix the  assembled dialog, music and sound effects. Each editor and mixing engineer has devoted years to fine-tuning their craft, so spare them a thought when you next see a movie!

For those interested in a career working  with sound, there are many options avail- able. Traditionally, entrants to the industry have learned 'on the job', and gradually built their careers as their skills developed. Contemporary employers are demanding higher skill levels for entrants into the industry. Where interest and dedication were admirable prerequisites in the past, formal training is now essential for those seeking entry into this dynamic industry. There are a wide  range ,of courses available which cover the  theory and basic techniques of working as a sound engineer, and many of these, programs may be followed to  degree  level or higher. If you are contemplating one of the many courses available, be sure to investigate not only the price, but also: how much hands-on time you will receive, as it is this alone that will develop  your skills.

If you are interested in audio for film or  theatre, consider a course that will give a thorough grounding in the craft and then  specialize later. No matter which path you ~ choose, a career working with sound is I among the most diverse and exciting you can imagine.
