The School of Biomedical Sciences is involved in the education and training of medical and biomedical scientists and technicians across a number of major disciplines Medical Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology/Genetics, Cytogenetics, Bioinformatics, Immunology, Haematology and Transfusion Science, Diagnostic Cytology, Histopathology, Human Biology, Transfusion Science each a field in its own right.
The School is large, complex and diverse, with a high research/consultancy profile. With the School of Pharmacy and Murdoch University, it is a partner in the Western Australian Biomedical Research Institute (WABRI), one of the larger research groups of its kind in the State.
School teaching staff are involved in cutting-edge research to help understand common diseases and infections, develop new methods of drug delivery, advance DNA identification, and investigate the transfer of and resistance to genetic material in humans, animals and other organisms.
The Schools Bentley facilities include student and associated instrument laboratories, hot/cold rooms, preparation areas, an anatomy facility, prosection room and mortuary, a dry laboratory, museum, a cytology suite, an electron microscopy preparation area, radioisotope dispensing and counting laboratories, six major research laboratories, an ultra/highspeed centrifugation laboratory, two computer laboratories, an animal house, a glassware preparation and sterilisation area, general and volatile stores and a workshop. Off campus, there is a molecular genetics unit at the Schools Royal Perth Hospital facility and a micromolecular research facility at Technology Park.
Within these laboratories and support facilities, there is a wide range of sophisticated and specialised scientific equipment including a DNA sequencer; HPLC; liquid scintillation and gamma counters; a fluorescence flow cytometer; ultra and high-speed centrifuges and cell counting equipment with the general range of spectrophotometers; tissue processing, cutting, staining, coagulation and electrophoresis equipment; laminar flows; C02 incubators; autoclaves and sterilization oven/incubators; microscopes; balances; pH-meters; and bench-top lab equipment.

School of Pharmacy
The School of Pharmacy is the only institution in Western Australia where formal pharmacy teaching and research are conducted. Pharmacy is the profession with a major involvement in the development, testing, manufacture and distribution of medicines and the monitoring of drug therapy. The School has one of the largest total enrolments of postgraduate students, including from overseas, of any of the pharmacy schools in Australia. In collaboration with industry, the School provides courses that fulfill the requirements of practitioners in hospital pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry. With the School of Biomedical Sciences and Murdoch University, it is a partner in the Western Australian Biomedical Research Institute (WABRI), the largest research grouping of its kind in the State.
Associated with WABRI is the Schools Pharmacogenetics Research Group which brings cutting-edge research such as identifying genetic variables affecting disease prevention and treatment, and their determination of drug activity and effects to postgraduate students education. Along with the normal facilities, the School of Pharmacy has a range of specialist analytical equipment including diode-array, multi-wavelength and other detectors for high performance liquid chromatography analyses. It also has equipment for capillary electrophoresis analysis and for gas chromatography mass spectrometry. In addition, there is a range of equipment for particle size analysis, dissolution, rheology, tabletting and sterile operations. Equipment to conduct various molecular studies includes real-time PCR and conventional PCR facilities.
The School has a postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy unit located at Royal Perth Hospital and a well-equipped Drug Information Laboratory.
