The Australian Film Industry on the International Stage
Author Australian Film Commission

Although Australia may not be the first place you think of when it comes to the glamorous world of film production, Australia really is a major player in the world of movie making.

Australian films have really made the international film world sit up and take notice of the good things going on down under. Mad Max, Shine, Strictly Ballroom, Muriel's Wedding, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert were not merely flashes in the pan.

The Australian Film Industry is going from strength to strength both critically and commercially. A hat-trick of awards at this year's Cannes Film Festival proves that. Nadia Tass' Amy won two of them, the Prix de la Jeunesse and Le Prix Cinecole, whilst John Polson won the Rail d'Or for the film Siam Sunset. Very promising futures lie ahead for both of them.

When you give it a bit of thought, this success is hardly surprising given the quality and diversity of film-related courses in Australia. Each one is specifically designed to train people in all the different aspects of the film industry. Whether you want to learn how to make movies or even become a make-up artist for films, there are courses in Australian institutions which put you in a great position to get into one of the most desirable industries in the world. The success of Australian films on a world-wide basis has prompted investment by Australian and national industry to provide movie-making facilities that arguably rival anything the rest of the world has to offer. International investment in Australian talent and facilities is becoming commonplace. George Lucas, of the Star Wars Trilogy fame, has recently revealed that he will be filming the remaining chapters of his multi-million dollar trilogy in Australia. This announcement has led to excitement from all and sundry in the exciting world of movies. And now, many of the world's studios are following suit. Australia is where it is happening at the moment, and the film industry is watching very closely. People studying film and its related aspects in Australia now have a great advantage: 'Hollywood' is right on their doorstep. The combination of international investment and Australian homegrown talent will definitely see this land of surfers and koala bears become the place to learn your trade and make your mark on the world stage of movies for the next Millennium and beyond!
