Asia-Pacific region.
Post-graduate Diploma (Cultural Material Conservation)
The Postgraduate Diploma allows students to undertake a research project
in cultural materials conservation. Students will gain a considerable
knowledge in an area of cultural materials conservation and engage in
critical assessment of the major theoretical or practical tenets. The
course provides a pathway to a higher research degree for students who
have not completed a four-year undergraduate degree with a research
component in cultural materials conservation. This program is designed for
those students who already have an undergraduate degree in cultural
materials conservation.
Masters by Coursework and Minor Thesis (Cultural Materials Conservation)
The coursework MA program is intended to provide graduates with a
professional qualification in cultural materials conservation. The course
teaches both the theory and practice of cultural material conservation,
with an emphasis on the philosophical, intellectual and scientific aspects
of professional practice.
Master of Arts and PhD (by Research)
The Masters by Research is aimed at students who wish to develop advanced
skills in carrying out independent and sustained research in cultural
material conservation. The course will culminate in the production of a
research thesis of 30,000 words. The thesis should demonstrate a critical
application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution
to existing scholarship.
The Doctor of Philosophy is the major research degree offered by the
University of Melbourne. The Centre offers a supervised research program
in cultural material conservation, culminating in a thesis of 80,000
words. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist
knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in
cultural material conservation.
Graduate Certificate in Art Authentication
The Graduate Certificate in Art Authentication provides students with a
general introduction to key concepts and issues in art authentication.
Students undertaking this program of study will develop a general
understanding of the main art historical, curatorial, legal, ethical and
analytical issues relating to art fraud and the processes of art
authentication.
The course is a response to industry demands for specialist training and
for a clearer definition of the processes involved in art authentication
and the policing and prosecution of art fraud. The sessions will be
presented by experts from a broad range of disciplines including art
history, conservation, criminology and analytical chemistry, and the
topics covered have been identified and developed in consultation with the
art industry.
The course content is suitable for students seeking to enhance their
knowledge of and their exposure to the multidisciplinary field of art
authentication. Participants will be drawn from the arts industry and law
enforcement sector including art collectors, dealers and auction houses,
curators, conservators, police and fraud investigation and prosecution

main theories and concepts relating to these areas of study; appreciate
the significance of these ideas and issues in the context of art
conservation studies as a discipline and develop skills of analysis in
relation to specific areas of art conservation studies.
