Caring for Our Boys

Newington College celebrates diversity: we have firm foundations in the Uniting Church tradition but welcome boys and families of all faiths and cultural backgrounds. At Newington College we seek to promote tolerance and encourage understanding of all differences. We call this our 'Pastoral Care Program'. This program is based on mutual care and respect: respect for one’s self respect for others and respect for the environment. There is a strong emphasis on assisting a boy to come to a better understanding of himself and the world around him so he learns to accept responsibility and acquire important leadership skills at many levels. We express our care for the boys through the positive and vibrant interactions that take place between the boys and their teachers on a daily basis. These interactions are supported by the Chaplain and the School Counsellor who work closely with the students staff and parents. They contribute directly to the welfare of the boys in particular and they are always happy to work with families on any academic social or personal matters. One of the greatest gifts we can give to Newington College boys is a belief in their own ability. Our teachers aim to encourage each one of our young boys to be assured of their individual worth to be open to new experiences and friendships to refine gifts that are already evident and uncover gifts that haven’t yet been developed. As our boys explore the best ways to learn they are challenged to take intellectual risks. When they engage in this risk-taking they receive great support from their teachers and classmates. Guidelines for behaviour are clearly articulated and we encourage parental involvement in many activities so as to create a true community where our boys parents and teachers learn together.

Learning Enhancement—Support and Gifted Education

Newington College's Learning Enhancement Program is an innovative and multi-faceted program which provides a sound basis for excellent support for young boys at Newington College regardless of their place along the learning spectrum. We understand that boys learn at different rates; our with teaching programs are tailored to assist those boys who learn more slowly while at the same time extending those who have already achieved the prescribed outcomes. Lindfield's Learning Enhancement team supports classroom teachers in catering for boys with particular learning needs. This process includes identification tracking processes and curriculum modification.

International Baccalaureate Programme

Newington College features the Primary Years Programme (PYP) which is a curriculum framework designed by the International Baccalaureate for students aged 3 to 12 years of age. The Programme promotes inquiry-based learning as the vehicle for developing deep conceptual understanding. It seeks to develop the whole person by engaging children in issues of local and global significance whilst maintaining a focus on key skills. The PYP provides the perfect framework for developing Lindfield as a learning community focused on student learning outcomes because it focuses on deep learning; it allows students to create true links between subject areas; it develops skillful ACTion-oriented and reflective learners; and it promotes students who are internationally-minded aware of ‘real life’ issues both locally and globally.

Technology

The Newington College Lindfield campus is extremely well resourced in all areas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) including infrastructure Hardware software and staff training. Our network consisting of wired and wireless access is fast reliable and accessible throughout the campus. RedCat technology using a surround sound audio system is installed in Lindfield classrooms to enhance a teacher’s natural voice and optimise learning conditions for boys. Boys in Years 5-6 use iPads in a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Program that continues to Year 8 after which boys BYOD laptops. Boys in Years K-4 have access 1: 1 to iPads. Mounted projectors interactive whiteboards digital still and video cameras and interactive response systems are a part of learning with technology for every boy. A learning intranet provides communication and collaboration for boys and teachers and a window into the classroom for parents. Members of the Lindfield teaching staff are active in their professional development and are competent users of technology developing stimulating lessons and activities that engage their students in the learning process. Boys are actively taught about cyber safety and in particular the importance of keeping personal information safe when online. They have access to a personal email address and the Learning Management System provides students with access to individual class pages.
