Assessment of Overseas Nurse Migration A key role of ANCI is the assessment of overseas nurses who wish to migrate to Australia. ANCI has been gazetted by the Minister for Immigration to perform the assessment function for the occupation of nursing. The outcome of the ANCI assessment is a determination about the eligibility of over- seas-educated nurses to apply for registration. Should the ANCI determine that a nurse is eligible to apply for registration, this counts towards the points that can be gained for immigration purposes. Nurse Education The nurse regulatory authorities are responsible under their respective legislation for accrediting nursing courses leading to registration or enrolment as a nurse. Graduates must be able to demonstrate the core competency standards for registration or enrolment, which are the ANCI Competency Standards. Undergraduate courses that lead to registration as a nurse have, since 1993, been provided through universities. There are several other education providers who, along with universities, provide post-registration courses. Courses for enrolled nurses are provided through the Vocational Education or Technical and Further Education (TAFE) systems. Further details regarding these pro- grams can be found in the Directory of Higher Education Nursing Courses 2000 - Preregistration & Postregistration, which is published by New Hobsons Press Pty Limited. Education Australia is an independent international organisation that provides service to overseas students who wish to study in Australia. All questions you have about course prerequisites and the like should be directed through them, not ANCI.
