In
1997, Charles Sturt University (CSU) introduced the Pharmacy degree to
help meet the increasing demand for pharmacists, especially in rural
areas of Australia. The degree requires four years of full-time study at
the Wagga Wagga campus in the new state-of-the-art laboratories. The
course emphasises pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical science and
biomedical science.
You
will learn appropriate dispensing, ethical, clinical, counselling and
management skills.
Career OpportunitiesMost
registered graduates in pharmacy find satisfying and challenging careers
as community pharmacists, where they may work as an owner, manager or on
a more casual part-time basis in one or more pharmacies.
A number of registered graduates choose employment in hospitals, where they may apply their clinical skills in
ensuring the safe supply of medications to the patient or they may be
involved in some of the specialist treatment programmes (e.g. cancer
therapy). Other pharmacists
work in the pharmaceutical industry, in diverse areas such as sales and
marketing, clinical trials or manufacturing and development.
There are career opportunities in government agencies, research
institutions and in teaching. If
you are considering a career in industry, research or teaching you
should consider the possibility of undertaking post-graduate studies to
refine the specialist skills required by those careers. It is also possible to complete an Honours programme during
the four-year degree period.
Professional RecognitionAfter
graduation from Charles Sturt University, you (in common with all other
graduates in pharmacy in Australia) are required to undertake a period
of supervised training. Currently,
in New South Wales, this period of pre-registration training is 2000
hours. The training is
structured by The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (NSW Branch) and
the Pharmacy Board of New South Wales. At the conclusion of that period
of training you will be assessed by both oral and written examinations
supervised by the Pharmacy Board, and after those assessments have been
passed, you may register and practice pharmacy anywhere in New South
Wales. Pharmacists,
registered in NSW, may also seek registration recognition anywhere
within the Commonwealth of Australia.
Practical
ExperienceDuring
last four sessions of the course, you will complete training periods
(i.e. externships) primarily in hospital or community pharmacy.
Externships give you the chance to apply your knowledge to real
problems in Pharmacy.
Admission RequirementsThe
assumed knowledge is 2U Mathematics, 2U Chemistry and 2U Biology or
Physics. Graduates in other disciplines, from recognised tertiary
institutions, should apply for entry through UAC and may apply for
credit for prior study. The
UAC Course Code is 242704.
FEESThe
normal HECS fee will be charged for this course.
