Study Psychology in Australia

Psychology at Curtin University: Jo Crothers

The School of Psychology attracts very able students into its graduate psychology programs which offer specialisation in clinical and health psychology, counseling psychology, organisational psychology, rehabilitation counselling and addiction studies. Research staff have established national and international reputations in the above areas as well as in cognition, community psychology, developmental psychology and motor skills. Psychology is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the health and human service sector.

The range of skills provided by a specialist postgraduate degree in psychology enables graduates to take advantage of the many exciting options opening up in this vibrant profession.  The Master of Science (Speech Pathology) is the only postgraduate professional preparation program for speech pathologists in Western Australia.

Photograph of Curtin campusThe course was developed in conjunction with the undergraduate curriculum for the Bachelor of Science (Human Communication Science). In this way, the equivalence of the competencies of graduates from both the undergraduate and postgraduate professional entry-level courses is ensured. The program is tailored for suitably qualified graduates from other disciplines who want to become speech pathologists. The opportunities for speech pathologists are diverse, with practitioners in high demand. To practise as a professional psychologist in Western Australia, graduates must register with the WA Psychologists Registration Board.

Graduates of the speech pathology program are eligible for membership of Speech Pathology Australia. The School has two computer laboratories for students' use, five specialist clinics (child development, clinical psychology, counselling, stuttering and stroke/head-injured adults), a general psychology laboratory, state-of-the-art audio and video technology and a specialist print resource centre. Use of facilities is determined by participation in relevant learning programs.
