Information security is a business enabler. In today's networked world, information security is more relevant than ever. From the latest internet worm, to the proliferation of identity theft, from phishing attacks on ATM machines, to spyware on your home PC, the risk to each one of us is no more than one mouse click away.
As communication and computing technologies have matured, new opportunities for electronic business have proliferated. The network infrastructure for these new activities is quite heterogeneous, ranging from public (such as the INTERNET, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), other public Packet networks) to private (the EFTPOS network, company based but countrywide or even worldwide INTRANETs) to a combination of a number of networks. The same heterogeneity is inherent in the network protocols, which are used in these various settings.
With convenience and ease of use, the risk of misuse and abuse also increases. The myriad opportunities presented by this flexible network infrastructure have to be balanced against the very real risks to communication such as eavesdropping, tampering with messages and payment instructions, and impersonation by malicious third parties. If this risk is not mitigated, the costs to a business or an individual can be extremely high. In effect, it's nothing less than our digital personae which are under attack, the most extreme case of which is termed Identity Theft when a digital miscreant assembles enough information in order to reconstitute your identity and use it in illegitimate ways.
Information Security and Assurance is the discipline which studies the theoretical, practical and managerial aspects of securing these networks against these threats. It utilises techniques from discrete applied mathematics, including algebra and probability, as well as from computer science, communications engineering and business.
Come join us on an intellectual journey where we will learn how to understand, develop, and deploy countermeasures to mitigate the risks inherent in the transmission, storage and retrieval of sensitive information. You will learn about Wireless LAN security, ethical hacking, the Advanced Encryption Standard, the RSA public key system, Elliptic Curve Cryptography, smartcards, digital cash, electronic payments, digital signatures and biometrics. You will learn both technical and management aspects of security, and be ready to join the workforce in the fastest growing IT sector of the last few years.
Building on the current 1.5 year Master of Applied Science (Information Security), (http: //www.rmit.edu.au/), the new 2-year Master of Applied Science (Information Security and Assurance)
(http: //www.rmit.edu.au/)is an evolution in keeping with industry demands and trends, with a significant aim being to unite the technical and business aspects of the Information Security Industry. In addition to a new core course (=subject) in Information Systems Risk Management, there will also be 24-credit point Project (the Industry Awareness Project followed by the Industry Linkage Project).
The Information Security team is currently involved in talks with industry to set up an internship program so that students may undertake these projects within industry. For details see under internship onwww.rmit.edu.au/mathstats/infosec.
Duration:
2 yrs (4 semesters) FT.
Entrance Requirements:
(In addition to the English requirements)
A First Class or High Second Class degree in Science or Engineering
OR
A First Class or High Second Class degree in Accounting or Business with mathematics subjects up to second year (eg. an accounting major with a computer science minor).
Careers:
The detailed approach of the Master's program is mainly aimed at producing Information Security managers by providing them with the principles underlying the components of Information Security systems, and technical specialists who are interested in the implementation, or critical evaluation, of Information Security systems.

I was looking at studying something related to Information Security after finishing my Bachelors. Coming from an Electronics engineering background I was looking for something less technical and more mathematical, because I knew the technical details are just details when you can understand the mathematical fundamentals. I came across the Information Security course offered by RMIT and was thrilled to find it perfectly suited me and was flexible enough to equip me for the real world. As an International student I am more than happy with what I experienced during the course. The faculty members were very knowledgeable and co operative.
Now that I am working as a Security Consultant I can further appreciate the foundation the course gave me in the field of Information security. We were encouraged to read widely and have opinions of our own, which were discussed regularly. There were staff student meetings conducted regularly to see what things were lacking and what can be done, influencing proactive involvement of students in administrative affairs. We were advised during the selection of projects and guided very effectively to gain the most out of the opportunity we had. The course has definitely helped me become a thorough professional and a better individual.
