From 1881 students were prepared for university entrance examinations. In 1901 St Scholastica’s College moved from Pitt Street (which became the site of Central Railway) to Glebe Point. The gates from Pitt Street were erected at the new site. The Glebe Point property Known as Toxteth Park Estate WAs formerly owned by George Wigram Allen. The Good Samaritan Congregational Centre now occupies the original home. The campus is close to Blackwattle Bay and is set in a superb landscape which has won prizes in the City of Sydney Garden Competition. The College continues today in the Benedictine tradition of the Good Samaritan Sisters. The curriculum is designed to allow all students to achieve their potential. Comprehensive distinctive and innovative teaching and learning programs prepare students for post-compulsory pathways in academic tertiary studies or further technical and vocational education. In Year 7 the College aims to give students a taste of a wide variety of subjects across all areas of the curriculum. All areas of study are compulsory. Typically a Year 7 student will study: English mathematics science religious Education History geography technology personal Development Health and Physical Education music visual Arts drama. In Year 8 the pattern of study is identical to Year 7 with the addition of studies in Languages Other than English. The College offers study in French italian japanese and Mandarin to students at this level. Students in Years 9 and 10 complete both Mandatory and Elective courses of study. Rich Extra-curriculum Program The extra-curricular life of the College is rich and diverse. Students are encouraged to participate in activities beyond the classroom which include extensive Music choir orchestral and Drama and Debating programs among other activities. These include: • The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for students from Year 9 onwards. • The ‘Scholarchie’ Art Portrait Competition which takes place during the Archibald Prize ‘season’ each year. • Public Speaking and Debating in the Catholic Secondary Schools’ Association Competition for students from all years. • Biennial Visual Arts and Writers’ Festivals Religous Education An area of commonality across all stages is the study of Religious Education. We are a Catholic school and as such pursue the formal study of Religious Education as an academic subject across all years. International Students St Scholastica’s College welcomes students from other countries at all year levels from Year 7 to Year 12 as day students or boarders. Not only do we have a lot to offer such students we also believe we have much to gain as a multicultural establishment which advocates friendship tolerance and understanding. Boarding College The Boarding experience at St Scholastica’s is very special. The Boarding community provides quality residential care for up to 90 boarders and offers places for girls in Years 7 – 12. Students come from a wide variety of cultures backgrounds and locations including country city and overseas forming a truly global community. The Boarding College works in partnership with parents in the care and education of their daughters aiming to create a welcoming and safe environment for students families and staff.
