Boys' Education at TSS

Founded in 1901 the Southport School is an Anglican day and boarding school on the Gold Coast from Prep Year to Year 12 with boarding available from Year 5. TSS is a member of the Great Public Schools’ Association of Queensland (GPS) and is the only boys’ school and boys’ boarding school on the Gold Coast. Renowned for our balanced and holistic approach to boys’ education we recognise that boys think and learn differently from girls. Cutting-edge educational practices include Leadership Development emotional Intelligence and Thinking Skills. We also provide integrated programs of co-curricular and academic with a low student-to-staff ratio. Students at TSS also participate in an extensive leadership development program with students assuming a variety of leadership roles within the School. TSS students perform better academically when they are involved in cultural and sporting activities. As a result they are able to learn better time management skills and organisational skills. All of our previous 2006 7 and 2008 OP 1 boys had a heavy involvement in our music cultural and sporting activities. Furthermore we encourage all of our students to participate in the School’s culture and to take advantage of the many opportunities the School provides.

Boarding at TSS

The House system was introduced in 1909 with the establishment of Thorold delpratt and McKinley Houses. Boarding has always been a tradition at TSS and recent upgrades provide some of the best boarding facilities in Australia. As well as our traditional intake from country areas we have boarders from all states and cities in Australia and international students from Asia europe middle East and the South Pacific. There are five modern boarding houses on the TSS campus each with their own Housemaster deputy Housemaster and Matron. Furthermore each house also has a minimum of four adult boarding supervisors. Boarding is available from Year 5 to Year 12 with an option of full weekly or occasional boarding. Boys entering one of the Senior School’s Boarding Houses remain in their House for all their years at TSS. This allows them to form long lasting friendships not only with boys their age but also with both younger and older boys. This system ensures strong relationships are built between the resident staff the boys and their parents encouraging a 'home away from home' environment and open three-way communication. The resident staff in each House operate a roster system which allows constant supervision and care for the boys. This ensures each house has a Housemaster and an Assistant who can lead the Pastoral Care. This is further enhanced by the availability of the School Chaplain school Counsellor and the Dean of Students. In addition each Year group in each House has a Pastoral Care Teacher who works as an advisor providing guidance and direction for each student. Once a week the Pastoral Care Teacher works on a number of different topics with a focus on life skills such as Leadership self-Esteem careers and Anti-Bullying strategies and other such like topics.

Teachers at TSS

We understand our teachers are integral to the success of our students which is why we are focused on recruiting and retaining high quality teachers. We ensure they receive continuous support and professional development and this is evident in our low staff turnover.

The school boasts magnificent modern facilities for academic boarding cultural and sporting activities. Such facilities include; state-of-the-art Science Centre the Annand Theatre which seats approximately 600 people extensive sporting ovals and facilities tennis and swimming pool complex medical facilities and five modern boarding houses.
