The school is highly international in its outlook, staff and curriculum. Its campus is situated near the United Nations Headquarters at the Vienna International Centre. Its student body represents 104 countries, with over half the students having parents working in the UN or who belong to the Diplomatic Community. Other parents represent the international business and local Austrian communities. The school's facilities include a cafeteria, two libraries, areas for music and art, seven science laboratories, two computer labs plus several hundred laptop computers, five indoor gymnasia, track and playing fields, an indoor and outdoor theatre, and an ecology area. The school offers the three International Baccalaureate programmes. For students in grades 11 and 12 the Diploma (IBDP) - a rigourous pre-university qualification recognised in 144 countries worldwide. For grades 6 to 10 the broad and multi-disciplinary Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and for grades pre-K to grade 5 the inquiry-based Primary Years Programme (IBPYP). The language of instruction is English and there is an ESL programme providing both in-class support and intensive tuition. Most Primary School students are encouraged to learn German once they become proficient in English; in Grades 6 through 10, students are required to learn German. Students are encouraged to continue studies in their mother tongue. Many students pursue their mother tongue as part of their IB Diploma programme. A dynamic Early Years Programme offers an inquiry-based experience in a developmentally appropriate setting for three, four and five-year-old children. In the Primary School, classroom practice utilizes whole class, group and individual style of teaching and learning according to the subject matter in hand and the needs of the students. Specialist subjects offered include English as a Second Language (ESL), German, Media Literacy, Music, Physical Education (PE) and Special Needs. Within the Secondary School, the following subjects are covered: English, German, Technology, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, PE, Performing and Creative Arts, and French or Spanish. In the final two years the students prepare for the IB Diploma. Examinations include equivalence to Austrian Matura which is also available within the IB Programme. |
