Options
There are three ways to take courses at Athabasca
University.
Individualized Study Most Athabasca University
students take courses in which they decide when to work on their course,
submit assignments and write examinations. In other words, the schedule
on which they work is individualized. While many students work on
courses out of their homes, some study at their place of work, a local
library or another suitable location.
Grouped (Paced) Study Some students prefer the
discipline and structure that working in a group provides. Unlike their
individualized study counterparts, students taking grouped study courses
are required to complete their work on a pre-set schedule with a group
of fellow students in a classroom setting. For a list of grouped study
courses, see
http: //www.athabascau. ca. For a list of
collaborating institutions where grouped study courses are available,
see
http: //www.athabascau. ca e-Classes
These classes are ideal for learners who like the discipline of a schedule, like contact with fellow students and instructors and want the flexibility of online study. Courses are completed on the Internet within a 13-week timetable starting in September and January, similar to semester offerings at traditional universities. Students and instructors communicate through discussion groups and e-mail. Technology enables learning teams across countries and continents to study collaboratively, while synchronous (real time) activities encourage students to communicate with their classmates. Student participation and completion of assignments on time are required.
Student support Our student support services set AU apart. A network of academic staff, advisors, counsellors, tutors, help desk personnel and support staff provide students with information and advice. Advisors can help you choose appropriate courses. They can help you plan a complete academic program. Counsellors can help you chart your career path. In each course, you have an assigned tutor for individualized academic help. Online resources include study, writing and exam assistance, ESL resources, access to marks, course information and other services.
