Athabasca University Canada

Quality Learning. Anywhere. Anytime.

Athabasca University, Canada’s Open University, is one of the world’s foremost and fastest growing online and distance education specialists, serving 34,000 students worldwide. Some AU courses and programs are also available in classrooms at partner institutions.

We are dedicated to removing barriers to success in university-level studies and to increasing the quality of educational opportunity for adult learners.

AU offers more than 700 courses in over 60 undergraduate and graduate degree, diploma and certificate programs. We have transfer agreements with hundreds of partner institutions. We offer college graduates the opportunity to build on their college diploma to complete a university degree and are committed to prior learning assessment.

Students can complete an entire program at AU or fast-track their studies at another institution by taking AU courses that transfer into their program there.

“My educational experience has been a journey. I discovered a lot about myself, including my strength, motivation and ability to persevere. I recommend AU to everyone!”

Our Teaching Methods

AU courses are available in two forms:

·  Individualized study: All courses are available as individualized study courses, and most students elect to study in this way. In these courses students decide when they will study, submit assignments, and write exams. Students work through their printed or online course material at home, at work or wherever they choose. Courses begin on the first day of any month. Students usually have six months to complete a three-credit course and 12 months to complete six-credit course. Throughout the course, students have access to qualified tutors and other support staff.

·  Grouped study: Some students prefer the structure provided by working in a group, and some AU courses are available in this format (See Calendar for availability). In grouped study courses, students work through a course on a set schedule with a group of classmates. These courses may be offered in a classroom at a partner institution, online, or through some combination of the two formats.

Student Support

AU’s extensive student support services include access to a network of faculty members, academic advisors, counsellors, tutors, librarians, help-desk personnel and other support staff who together provide students with information, advice, and service. A range of individualized accommodations and support services are available to students with physical, sensory, psychological or learning disabilities. Tutors provide individualized academic guidance. Advisors assist in choosing courses and planning programs. Counsellors help chart career paths. Library staff give guidance on research and provide books and other research material. These and all other student services can be easily accessed through a single student portal (myAU) on the university website.

“If you've got the flexibility to study when you want on weekends or evenings, that really makes a big difference. I couldn't have completed my master’s in a traditional program. I just wouldn't have had the time to do that.”

Warren Strange

Master of Science—Information Systems

“The best thing about studying at a distance was the flexibility to maintain my position at work but, at the same time, to be able to develop a relationship, even though it wasn't a face-to-face relationship, with various colleagues across the country and learn from their experiences as well.”

Carol Wilson

Master of Health Studies
