CAMOSUN COLLEGECamosun College is a public community college established in 1971 in Victoria, the capital city of the Province of British Columbia. Community colleges are post-secondary institutions where you can choose to study academic programs or career-oriented practical diploma and certificate programs. A unique aspect of a community college is the university transfer programming. Students who are sure of their area of interest can complete a two-year Associate Degree in a range of disciplines of arts and sciences and the universities accept the courses as equivalent to their own. Students not sure of where their interests lie find it helpful to take a selection of courses for which transfer credit is awarded by the universities. Other students are looking for practical training to get jobs, and the College's career programs teach the skills needed for employment. Camosun College programs include English as a Second Language, College Preparatory, university transfer courses, associate degrees, and more than 60 certificate and diploma career programs in areas of arts and sciences, business, health, technology and vocational trades training. Many of the career programs are taught in a co-operative education format. Co-operative Education is the integration of academic studies with paid periods of relevant work experience in industry, business and government. Students alternate between full-time studies and full-time work, resulting in a graduate who is better prepared to enter the work force. College staff members are responsible for developing and monitoring co-op student work terms and in assisting students in the development of their own job search strategy. International students are eligible to register in programs offered in the co-op format. International students must be at least 18 years of age or older by the last day of their first academic session AND have completed the equivalent of grade 10 in a 12-grade system OR possess a grade 12 graduation from a recognized institution. Upon arrival at the College, assessments are made of English, and possibly mathematics, skills in order to determine the right level of study. Students must fulfill all academic prerequisites, including the English level, prior to admission into a post-secondary program. All levels of English as a Second Language are available beginners, intermediate and advanced as well as two levels of College Preparatory ESL in order to complete the grade 12 English required for study at the post-secondary level. Each week ESL students receive twenty hours of classroom instruction and spend at least five hours in the multimedia lab. International students and new Canadians are in class together so there are many different nationalities and cultures represented. As well, students have access to computer labs for email and internet use. The CityVictoria is situated on Vancouver Island, a large island off the west coast of Canada.
