Red Deer College Canada
Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence
Red Deer College is
celebrating 40 years of excellence serving the educational needs of our
community.
Established in 1963, Red
Deer College has grown from a small community college to one of Canada's
most comprehensive colleges offering certificates, diplomas, degree
completion, apprenticeship and credit-free programs. This growth has
occurred naturally without losing the intimate community college
environment where you, the student, matter most.
Students continue to report their top reasons for
attending RDC are the quality of its instructors, the support they
receive from instructors and small class sizes. At Red Deer College, our
focus is on you and your success.
Innovation creates opportunity
Red Deer College has found a variety of ways to provide the best quality
education without large increases to student tuition. The Red Deer
College Foundation provides an increasing number of scholarships and
awards to help you offset the rising cost of post-secondary education.
The Alumni Office continues its ambitious campaign to connect with
students, both past and present.
Our new Library Information Common dedicates large amounts of space to
student endeavours and serves as a meeting place on campus. It is a
state-of-the-art facility offering 165 interactive computers and 20
wireless laptops with access to library resources, the Internet and
productivity software. There are also 24 docking stations for students
to connect to the College network using their own laptop.
A partnership with the local Health Region and Bethany Care Society to
build a unique, extended-care housing facility on campus has created
exciting new opportunities for students in education and nursing to
community development and personal care attendant. CollegeSide is slated
to open this spring.
A new partnership between Red Deer College, SAIT, David Thompson Health
Region and the City of Red Deer Emergency Services Department provides a
paramedic training program based in Red Deer. The College also offers
several degree opportunities through its collaborations with
universities. Students may complete their University of Alberta degrees
in Middle School Education or Nursing. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of
Social Work programs are offered in conjunction with the University of
Calgary.
A
collaboration with Athabasca University gives students with two-year
business diplomas the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Management
degree on the RDC campus or through a combination of online and
on-campus courses.
Due to
the growing industry demand for skilled trades personnel, Red Deer
College has expanded its Trades & Industrial Training programs to offer
the Apprenticeship Cook and Instrument Technician programs. This brings
RDC's apprenticeship offerings up to 12 trades including Automotive
Service Technician, Carpenter, Electrician, Heavy Equipment Technician,
Locksmith, Plumber, Sprinkler Systems Installer, Steamfitter/Pipefitter,
Water Well Driller and Welder. The College also offers pre-employment
training and certificates in Automotive Service Technician and Carpentry
& Construction.
Distance Learning on the grow
You
may access several distance learning programs either online or via
satellite campus locations. Red Deer College's apprenticeship programs
offer Locksmith, WHMIS, Water Well Drilling, Pump-Installer, and
Transportation Safety Director programs online. Other programs offering
distance-learning opportunities include Early Childhood Development,
Pharmacy Technician, Virtual Assistant Certificate, Teacher Assistant,
Legal Assistant and Computer Systems Technology.
eCampusAlberta
is a consortium of 15 colleges and technical institutes, including Red
Deer College that has been established to increase access to high
quality online learning opportunities. At RDC, students may access
programs in Remote Sensing for Geographic Information Systems, Arts &
Cultural Management and International Community Development.
The
College launched its International Education Office this past year. The
Office's mandate is to foster international cooperation and provide
assistance to students in accessing the diverse knowledge and learning
opportunities required in today's global community.
Study
tours, computers and more
With Red Deer College's focus on lifelong learning, Extension Services
has expanded its part-time and credit learning opportunities. Extension
Services is also responsible for a number of study tours available to
both credit students and members of the community. This year's tours
include Kenya, Mexico and Belize, as well as an art tour to Amsterdam
and Berlin. Extension Services also offers community programming in
business, computers, art, dance and fitness.
Top athletics program
Red Deer College has one of the top athletics programs in Canada.
The
Kings Volleyball team has been Canadian College Athletics Association
champion for the past four years. RDC's Kings Volleyball Coach Keith
Hansen was named CCAA Coach of the Year for both 2002 and 2003.
It's
an exciting time at Red Deer College with the growth of the campus and
the development of new learning opportunities for you!
