British International School, ShanghaiThe British International School, Shanghai was opened in
2002 to meet the needs of British and expatriate parents who wish their
children to receive a British education. The English National Curriculum
is used, adapted to reflect the needs of the international setting and
community. The British International School, Shanghai has three
sections. In the Foundation classes, (Nursery and Reception 3-5 years),
the curriculum concentrates on basic pre-writing, practical number and
reading skills. There is interaction through stories, songs and
discussions with the children's teachers. Reading and language
development receive priority. The UK Foundation Stage Curriculum, based
on the six areas of learning, is used.
In the Primary classes, (Key Stage 1 and 2, 5-11
years), a more formal structure ensures that children develop their
potential in all areas of the National Curriculum, but especially in
the core subjects. In Key Stages One and Two the children are taught
mainly by the class teacher, making use of cross-curricular topics
embracing not only the core subjects but also art, design,
technology, geography, history, information and communication
technology, music, personal, social and health education, physical
education. Chinese and French are also taught at appropriate levels
depending upon the child's fluency in these languages.
In the Secondary classes, (Key Stage 3, 4 and 5,
11-18 years), there is specialist teaching in all subject areas.
Core subjects are English, mathematics and science with the
foundation subjects of art, geography, history, music, French,
Chinese, information technology, PE and PSHE.
The British International School, Shanghai tests at
the end of Key Stages using the UK Statutory Assessment Tests and
all children receive an entry baseline assessment. Children from
Year 3 are tested regularly with other UK standardised tests so
parents may make comparisons of their child's potential and
achievement. In Years 10 and 11 the pupils are prepared for the
IGCSE and GCSE examinations in eight to ten of the above subjects.
Year 12 and 13 pupils will be prepared for A-levels or the
International Baccalaureate Diploma and university entrance.
The British International School, Shanghai currently
occupies a modern, purpose-built primary school building and a new,
architect-designed, fully equipped and resourced secondary school
will be opening on an adjacent site in September 2004. The campus is
situated on a quiet and clean residential complex and has the
benefit of a pollution free environment. Outside there are pleasant
grounds and play areas.
To ensure that the British International School,
Shanghai truly reflects a British school, it has been extensively
resourced from UK. The classrooms have been designed to provide a
light and airy comfortable environment. The sports hall is equipped
with PE material to supplement outdoor sports facilities and the
primary school also has a Library, ICT Lab, science lab, art room
and music room.
The teachers are recruited from the UK. Each teacher
is fully qualified and experienced. Classroom teachers are UK
trained and National Curriculum experienced graduates. Approximately
50% of the students are British and European, with the other 50%
representing 16 different countries.
