Chinese International School - requires a brief explanation. We are
Chinese first and foremost by virtue of a curriculum that is
delivered in English and Putonghua (Mandarin). We are International
both through the demographics of our student body, which includes
approximately twenty-five nationalities, and through our commitment
to fostering international mindedness via curricular and
co-curricular offerings. As a School, we seek to be a friendly,
smiling community in which the highest standards of academic
excellence are embodied in confident, well-adjusted young people. I

The CIS program prepares students exceptionally well for the
challenges of today's world. It aims to develop understanding and
encourages students to inquire and to think critically and
creatively. It strives for balance among the disciplines and for
balance between classroom and non-classroom learning.
A defining characteristic of the school is the fact that there are
no separate language or curriculum streams and all students pursue a
single program taught in both Chinese (Mandarin) and English. In
Reception to Year 2, equal time is devoted to the two languages. In
Years 3 to 6, the ratio shifts to 65% English and to 35% Chinese. In
the Secondary school, the amount of time spent on Chinese reduces
progressively but it remains compulsory and central to the program.
Traditional full-form characters are used, except for the teaching
of Chinese as a second language in the Secondary school when
simplified characters are used.
The school is committed to providing starting level Chinese courses
in all years, and students without prior knowledge of Chinese are
welcomed at the school.
Homework is carefully monitored to ensure that assignments are
constructive and that overall loads are not excessive.

CIS is located on the top of Braemar Hill, a quiet residential area
noted for its many schools. The school derives much of its sense of
community from its single campus focused around three central
courtyards. Opened in 1991, the campus commands spectacular views of
Victoria Harbor and the surrounding hills.
While the surrounding green areas are easily accessible for sporting
activities and field excursions, CIS is also within easy reach of
Hong Kong's dynamic urban centers. CIS is just five minutes by bus
or taxi from the Causeway Bay shopping district and Mass Transit
Rail (MTR) system; ten minutes from the historic Happy Valley
racecourse and playing fields; and fifteen minutes from Central, the
city's high-rise business hub.
