Shanghai American SchoolShanghai American School is a private, non-profit
co-educational international school established originally in 1912 and
then re-established in 1980. The Shanghai American School operates under
the umbrella of the American Consulate in Shanghai. It is owned by the
SAS Parent Association and is governed by a Board of Directors elected
from that group. The goal of the Shanghai American School is to serve
qualified students from the expatriate population of Shanghai. The
language of instruction is English. The core curriculum is supplemented
by offerings in physical education, music, dance, drama, English as a
Second Language, computers, library, Chinese, French and Spanish. Field
trips throughout the greater Shanghai area are supported and encouraged.
Secondary students participate in Math Counts, Model United Nations and
a variety of other activities. There is also an after-school activity
program that includes athletics, crafts, arts and academic pursuits.
Shanghai American School operates on two
newly-completed, purpose-built campuses. Facilities include
libraries, science labs, cafeterias and gymnasium as well as regular
classrooms.
Shanghai American School year begins in the last
week of August and ends in mid-June. Local Chinese holidays as well
as a winter and spring break fall within the academic year.
